AWESOME video of the north shore line being tested! It's a must watch. Plus some nice ambient techno music.

What a strange way to dismantle a structure, huh? It's like a rotting pumpkin.

I agree, it seems very odd that they didn't just implode it like they would any other structure. Perhaps this technique is cheaper or requires fewer laborers.

I imagine there are a lot more hoops to jump through if you're going to use explosive charges as opposed to plasma cutters.

But that being said, I'm sure it came down to a cost/benefit analysis. There is an awful lot of planning that goes into imploding a building.... I'm thinking that the Civic Arena probably wasn't big or beefy enough to warrant all of that overhead when they can just cut supports and bring down a section "every two weeks" or whatever they estimated.

No pictures to offer, but the first phase of the Oakland Portal apartments seems to be moving along rapidly, and they also seem to be doing a lot of site prep for the future phases.

Really horrible:

I'm glad they are starting with much-needed residential units, and I think this whole project should ultimately help stimulate redevelopment all along the Bluff/Uptown, but I really don't understand why they went with such a dated and non-contextual design, particularly for what are supposed to be luxury apartments.

Why couldn't they just have consulted Jean Claude Van Dam for the demo work?!

Regarding the Oakland Portal project, if that is supposed to portray Oakland as a big retirement community, then I say "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!"

Now where are the people in wheelchairs and walkers to enhance the visual effect?

What a disgusting rendering... this is what Private Dick and I were complaining about. Incredibly lame.

In my view that is WAY worse than the Strip renderings. Way worse, in fact, than any similar project in Pittsburgh that I am aware of (Lot 24, Doughboy Square Apartments, East Liberty Place, even Pitt's new dorm).

I love the Doughboy Square development. That is quality.

I forget what Lot 24 and East Liberty Place are...

East Liberty Place North (actually built):

Lot 24 (in progress):

Nothing groundbreaking, but reasonably contemporary.

The Courtyard by Marriott in Shadyside/Bloomfield looks way better than that.
