David Chipperfield's The Bryant Soars in Manhattan

Celebrated British architect David Chipperfield's vision for his first ground-up residential tower in the United States is quickly coming to life. HFZ Capital Group tapped the architect for a luxury project at 16 West 40th Street in Manhattan, just opposite busy Bryant Park and New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.

I like it. It has a solid, physical presence, and feels like a building should. Far too many of the all glass designs fail at that. And it looks like it's always been there, a plus to me.

33-Story Hotel-Residential Tower, The Bryant, Nearly Tops Out At 20 West 40th Street, Midtown

Constructionof the 33-story, 402-foot-tall mixed-use building under construction at 20 West 40th Street, located along Bryant Park in Midtown, has reached the parapet. However, it has yet to be structurally topped if you count the bulkhead. The building’s façade and window elements are also currently being installed, as seen in a photo posted to the YIMBY Forums by ILNY. The 824,216-square-foot building, dubbed The Bryant, will host a 230-key hotel within the ground through 14th floors, and 57 condominium units on the 15th through 32nd floors. Amenities, some of which will serve both the hotel and the residences, include a fitness center, private residential storage units, conference rooms, and a terrace club on the sixth floor, with a restaurant. There will also be two additional restaurants on the ground and cellar levels. HFZ Capital Group is the developer, while London-based David Chipperfield Architects is the design architect. Stonehill & Taylor Architects is serving as the architect of record. YIMBY’s last update on the project was in November, when the structure was six stories above street level. Completion is expected in early 2017.

David Chipperfield's The Bryant Nearing Completion in Midtown Manhattan

It has been seven months since our last update about the David Chipperfield-designed, HFZ Capital Group-built The Bryant in midtown Manhattan. Located along Bryant Park, from which the 57-storey, 230-room, 57-unit, hotel and residential tower gets its name, The Bryant's exterior work appears virtually complete. The nighttime illumination coming from within allows for a tantalizing sneak-peak of how the interior of the structure will appear once the project is completed later this year.
