I kind of wouldn't mind if they ended up just cladding the base the same as the rest of the tower... Something like my quick render:

And before someone gets all nit-picky... I realize the base has ventilation requirements... I said "Something like" not exactly like.

Does anybody know what the gold and black building in Lower Manhattan is? I've seen it in a bunch of pictures and always wondered.

It reminds me of the American Radiator Building from far away but looks absolutely nothing like it close up.

I'd agree - if the base tapered inwards in harmony with the upper part of the structure. Since the base has a distinctly different taper, I'd prefer to see it also clad in a different fashion.

Turquoise or silver instead would have made that look sweet!

No it doesn't.

The base is exactly the same shape as the first 13 floors of the office levels, only upside down.

???????????

Should have worded that differently, but yea the whole "upside down" arrangement distinguishes it from the rest and deserves a different facade treatment IMO.

I think that base cladding looks terrible. I'm really, really hoping for something as close to the prismatic glass as possible. I'm honestly more worried about the base of this building than the loss of the X-braces on tower 3...

Another wide angle shot.

Alyssa Gonzales

I hope they get the base to as close as this as possible. I can't imagine it looking any different than the renderings. Or not having a similar effect.

It's a 9/11 memorial outside of Boston's Logan Airport.

Look from the aerial picture you can clearly tell that One World Trade Center has surpassed the Beekman Tower in height. That proves anyone that doubts it wrong.
