Forgot how bad the new renderings are compared to the initial ones. It almost looks institutional. Not excited about this project at all.

I also noticed some action on this site in the last week. It definitely looks like a proper excavation is beginning.

"Holiday Inn King Edward St. Reservations, how may I help you?"

"Uh yeah, I am coming to visit the Nation's Capital for the first time next week and I would like to get a room with a good view"

"Absolutely sir, we have an East facing room on the 7th floor with a view of glorious Vanier, or even better...a West facing room on the 9th floor with a view of the Peace Tower framed by two homeless shelters. Take your pick!"

Went past here on the weekend; excavation/footing work is well underway.

I get how some are unimpressed by this but any investment on King Edward is good, it is a significant improvement on what was there before and it will bring some tourists into the area.

The problems with the view towards Vanier would be....?

I'm not sure if I like this building or not... it's such a weird mix of styles...

But, like a few of you have stated, any investment along King Edward is an improvement!

Forgive me for detecting an undertone of sarcasm.

Firefighters rig basket to rescue injured worker in 75-foot construction pit

Megan Gillis, Postmedia
Published on: September 15, 2017 | Last Updated: September 15, 2017 11:11 AM EDT

Firefighters used special rigging and lift systems to rescue an injured construction worker from the bottom of a 75-foot deep hole at a King Edward Avenue construction site.

Paramedics treated the man in his 40s who’d suffered a medical emergency and was located down the hole as firefighters worked to lift him out.

Paramedics were able to use scaffolding to get down to the scene, but it would have been dangerous to move the patient up the stairs.

Firefighter specialists rigged up a Stokes basket, a stretcher that can be hoisted using a harness, at the construction site near St. Patrick Street.

The worker was conscious and stable condition but unable to get out because of a back injury.

The fire department’s high angle team were on scene as paramedics attended to the man.

How deep is this? I can't imagine it having THAT many underground parking levels just for a mid-sized Holiday Inn.. ?

97 parking spaces on 2 underground levels, according to the plans:
http://webcast.ottawa.ca/plan/All_Im...Floor Plan.PDF

That does look very deep for just 2 levels though, doesn't it? Maybe there also going to be a secret underground bunker level?

It's possible that facilities like laundry, maintenance, kitchen, etc would be underground, adding another level.

Still can't believe that the city would yet again agree to such mediocrity in the heart of downtown...and on a street which had such potential to be a beautiful boulevard (anyone remember the grand idea for King Edward to become"Ottawa's Champs Elysees" about 15 years ago?)

No, not according to the linked floorplan document.

I'm ok with this mediocrity on King Edward. Anything to jumpstart the gentrification is good as far as I'm concerned, even a lowly Holiday Inn Express.

I agree with you. Did not want to see another 10-20 years of nothingness there.

My guess is the ground is still very sandy there (just look at the retaining wall for the pit). They probably wanted to dig down to something a bit more stable, pour footings (or drive piles even deeper) and then backfill with gravel.

Did you see what it looked like 75 years ago?
