Its typical Halifax anti-business policy. The new library could have easily had a retail part at street level to help cover costs, but that would be evil?

The bright lights of retail would have detracted from the regal aura of Queen Judith, so of course it is disallowed by decree.

Yes, that unfortunately was the case.

A paragraph in metronews.ca from December 2008 states - The original plan included creating office and retail space that could be rented out, but the board concluded Nova Scotia Power customers shouldn’t pay for that, given the worsening economy. “The Board is not persuaded the options for third-party office and retail space rental are sound.” (source: http://metronews.ca/news/halifax/820...-headquarters/)

In any case, considering the concrete monstrosity that it once was, I think this renovation can only be considered as a overwhelming architectural success story. It has gone from an urban blight to a harbour-side iconic building (in my opinion). Once the Discovery Centre opens it should draw more public attention.

No, I don't think so, not if it was done correctly. The Vancouver library has the following at ground level in its atrium: a pizza shop, a convenience store, sushi, a cafe, a gift shop/art gallery, a pub. They complement the main focus, which is the library. The building also houses municipal offices.

Vancouver also has a new community centre partly subsidized by apartments above.

Vancouver, Vancouver, Vancouver... ;-)

Anyway, we could be much more creative in generating revenue for interesting public projects in Halifax.

Not sure why it has taken over 3 years to put their sign up but noticed it was up yesterday.

It's a relatively new logo, isn't it? I'd guess they knew it was coming and didn't bother ordering the old one.

Seeing that mount and wires there drove me nuts. I was happy to see the sign up, I think there were some other mounts on the water side.

I couldn't find a thread for this so I thought this was an appropriate place.

The building is completely fenced off and interior demolition is well underway.
They have also started work across the street for what I will assume is the construction of the new pedway.

There was an interesting story in AllNS yesterday about the Medjuck family legal battles. In it they mentioned that this building was built with basically no attention paid to energy-efficieny because it was originally heated by dirt-cheap waste heat from the power plant. There is little insulation, the glass is single-pane, etc.

Seemed like a good decision at the time, but then steam from the power plant was cut off and heating costs skyrocketed. So I imagine this new facade will be a big improvement for more than just aesthetics.

Good insight. I was curious to know the business case side of things with this one. Explains the need for the new cladding.

Can an admin change the name of this thread to reflect the project name. I always have a hard time finding the thread.

Some of the new glass is being installed.

I've updated the thread title to something I think should be clearer and easier to understand. Since the power station is now a distant memory and this is expanding to 5151 Terminal Road the building use should be distinctive enough to identify the thread.

It looks less different than the renderings had me believe.

All they have done is changed out the windows. They have not yet put in the new panels between floors.
