DUBAI, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Qatar National Bank , the country's largest lender by market value, plans to build one of the world's tallest towers in the Qatari capital Doha to house its new headquarters, a magazine reported on Sunday.

The skyscraper, for which main contractors have been invited to express interest, would be taller than the 509-metre Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, which is the world's tallest completed building, London-based weekly MEED reported in its latest issue.

The tower will have a total built-up area of 235,000 square metres, with five basement levels, MEED said without saying where it got the information.

Burj Dubai, being developed by Emaar Properties , will become the world's tallest building when it is completed in 2009.

Who knows if this is still the design. There is barely any information on this project but a week or two ago, somebody found out that piling has actually been completed here.

Wow, 1,673 feet and just 61 floors. I expect a very large ornamental spire of some kind.
Looking forward to seeing a rendering. Being a bank, I assume they have their (internal?) financing secured. With the foundation already complete, the design must also be finalized.
Potentially a very intersting supertall... we need details!

I just saw some renderings.

Very distasteful building with no ornamental spire. Ick. I was very dissappointed. I'll try and post some pics if I can get a hold of some.

Just by viewing the Architect's style, I can see how.

I wouldn't trust Tangled SLC as a judge of taste.

Would like to see a rendering, too, well this is all I can find, don't know if this is the correct tower, doesn't look 500m+

No need for that comment. Everyone has there likes and dislikes for whatever type of architectural style exist.

Unless the Architect has changed its style, then I do not know if that is a correct rendering. According to various websites, the Architect style is more of what one could see by watching the "Jetson's". (Those of you old enough would know what I am referring about.)

MEED is usually quite reliable so I will change the floor count. Main contract due to be awarded in March

When completed, the tower will be the second highest tower in the world after Burj Dubai.
the 101 storey, 510 meter tower will be awarded in March.

I have the opposite reaction. It seems atavistic to me, although I can't quite place exactly what era/location it reminds me of.

It looks pretty interesting. Anybody notice the thing hanging off the side in the first rendering? Helipad?

Love the slender profile.

i like it too, it looks particularly evil... or for some reason it reminds me of an emmy award, or a 1920's eagle art deco statue.

anyways, it's certainly different, although i see some resemblance to almas tower. and i love the coloring! usually gold looks crappy, but it fits the design perfectly. also, yeah, it looks like a helipad.

Some reports say the tower will have 61 floors, others say it will have 101.

CTBUH says 104 is the correct figure.

It certainly is unique. Very interesting. If that is a heli-pad protruding from the side it's a crappy place for one. One bad gust of wind and disaster.

The Gulf is gonna have quite a spectacular lineup of skylines on its weatern shore pretty soon, this along with Kuwait City, Abu Dhabi, Dubai etc. These countries, with similar geopolitical mindsets (which may allow for easier cross-border cooperation) an relative geographic proximoty between cities separated by swaths of flat, unused buildable land, have great potential for becoming quite a business hub on a global level.
