The only show I can think of is Continuum, which is a Vancouver-filmed show which setting is actually Vancouver.

"Are We There Yet," a family movie with Ice Cube had a road trip from Portland to Vancouver, and of course the whole thing is filmed here. Saw a bit of it on TV, pretty awful, but successful enough to have a sequel and TV series spin off. Wikipedia said it made almost $100 million.

First few paragraphs from a Sun article. B.C.'s film industry had a huge year.

Quote:
New Westminster’s new Anvil Centre is a modern cultural gathering place on Columbia Street with studios, conference space and a 434-seat theatre.

But it recently took on a different role, becoming the San Francisco headquarters for the notorious Yakuza Japanese criminal organization featured in the gangster film Darc, which wraps up its Metro Vancouver shooting schedule next week.

Similar unique transformations take place throughout Vancouver regularly now as the value of B.C.’s booming film and television production sector hit an estimated record of $2 billion for the year ending March 31, 2015.
Lots more...

I am not even employed by the industry, but I am very delighted by it. I find it so fun to see tv-series and movies being shot in our beautiful city. It brings a certain vibrancy and sense of importance to this city.

I wonder if film industry in Toronto is also booming? When they had the #SaveBCFilm campaing few years ago, the worry was about all work leaving for Toronto. Have they been further benefiting from this situation as well, anyone know?

More special FX work coming in Vancouver is very exciting. Too bad Pixar left so suddenly, as they were definitely a high-profile company. Hopefully they will return one day.

I'm not in the industry either, but Vancouver is more reliant on foreign productions (which obviously increased drastically) than Toronto. I'm sure Toronto had a strong year, but I would be surprised if they came close to 2 billion.

Besides the lower Canadian dollar, Ontario just reduced their tax credits for film production, so that should benefit BC even more.

Vancouver is really starting to bring in TV production as well, which is a big contributor. This year Vancouver matched New York for the most pilots filmed:

So... any chance of scaling back the tax credits?

Da Vinci's Inquest was filmed here and takes place here. CBC canceled it in 2005

Hey look they're all pretty much police procedural's.

Robson Arms was also filmed and took place here, CTV, canceled in 2008

There are also TV shows that have "pieces" filmed/set in Vancouver even though the most/entire tv series is filmed here. eg
Once Upon a Time (ABC)
X-Files (Fox)

"Shoot to Kill" (1988) is a film that is partially filmed in Vancouver, and the oldest thing I have aside from the Never Ending Story (1984) (which "the real world" scenes were filmed in Vancouver but it's ambiguous where it takes place.) The Never Ending Story parts 2 and 3 were also filmed here.

"Better than Chocolate" (1999) was filmed and takes place in Vancouver.

2012 has a piece that takes place in Vancouver, and was filmed here.

That's all off the top of my head.

IMDB lists over 6119 titles that were filmed here of which they really picked up after 1986.

Funny ya mention that flick. Was thinking about same the other day. Saw it many times on TV - always enjoy it from an historical perspective - watching Van City live back in the day. Not only the HV roof scene... but watching them drive along the newly completed `Upper Levels Highway` westbound from Taylor Way. Without even the concrete median barrier yet in place.

BTW, in that same vein, I recall watching a Vancouver-set movie on TV in B & W. Filmed all over downtown Van City. Filmed in late 1950`s to early 1960`s. About a young couple. Not much interested in plot itself - seemed to even be soft-core porn genre from back in the day.

Have been searching the `net ever since to find out what film it was to view again. No success. Watching it seemed akin to reliving much of downtown Van City from the late 50`s or early `60`s. Very cool.

Any idea?!

I find it annoying that not a single disaster movie has ever had a destruction scene set in Vancouver (and honestly rarely Seattle or Portland as well).

I am actually starting to get a little tired of seeing San Fran and LA destroyed again and again and again (with token Sydney / Tokyo / and or Hong Kong thrown in for non American cities).

It doesn't need to be the climatic destruction scene or anything like that, but just even set in the middle of a montage would be nice.

It is strange, but Vancouver is more prominent in Japanese movies than they are in American movies, in fact a major Japanese movie was released last year, and the entire movie takes place in Vancouver (but hilariously it was filmed in Tokyo). Vancouver was even in the title of the film.

PS, the Japanese movie "Godzilla 2000" did have a Vancouver scene in the middle of its world wide destruction montage, but it was a fat kid eating chocolate watching the destruction on TV, haha!

I remember seeing a movie trailer a few years ago that had the Lions Gate Bridge falling apart. Can't recall the exact movie.

I'm not sure whether you are only referring to Godzilla movies where Vancouver plays itself, but the latest, big-budget Hollywood Godzilla movie was shot in Vancouver (which was a massive box office success in 2014) and Godzilla did plently of damage in the streets of Vancouver (playing San Francisco). Here you can see Godzilla about to kick some ass on the corner of West Cordova and Thurlow:

It's a surprise what you said about Vancouver being more prominent in Japanese movies but it's also not a surprise. That means I didn't know Vancouver was prominent in their movies, however, it makes sense when you consider that many Japanese like coming here.

the pilot was filmed in LA and then it was moved here and apparently the cast wasn't happy about the move
