It's so hard to get construction photos because most natives avoid that area like the plague...

My theory is that it's progressing so slowly that a few photos once every few months seems to document the progress pretty well.

I was by there on Tuesday and things didn't look too much different from the most recent pictures. There were people working on it though.

Ban newspaper boxes outside new Jewish museum for security purposes?

The National Museum of American Jewish History will open on Independence Mall in 13 months, and planners are already giving serious thought to security.
City Council's Streets and Services Committee today will consider legislation to prohibit newspaper boxes on the sidewalks near the museum, now being built at 5th and Market streets.

Councilman Frank DiCicco introduced the legislation Sept. 24. His aide Brian Abernathy said that it had come at the request of the museum after concerns about explosive devices and other threats.

Gwen Goodman, the museum's executive director, said the precaution had been suggested by a security consultant. Goodman compared the security idea to precautions taken at most public buildings.

"It's not like we're the only ones looking into security," Goodman said. "But we are a Jewish institution. Jewish institutions have had to take extra care."

The local museum, five stories and 100,000 square feet, is scheduled to open in November 2010.

Thanks for the pictures, and agreed. Does anyone know why this is taking 400 million years to complete? It looks like such a small building...should have only taken a year to build, right? Are they using really odd construction materials and highly-customized everythings?

Once museum opens in November, 2010 you will see the high level of detailing and materials that are going into this project. It is a "jewel" in the making. Patience please. It will be worth the wait.

Next year, the museum expects to hold its Dec. 25 event at its new building on the east side of Independence Mall.

About $120 million has been raised toward a goal of $150 million for construction of the five-story building and an endowment. The facility is slated to open in November.

I've been watching the Cam (http://www.intechconstruction.com/webcam_nmajh.html)
for any months and have always been confused about the front face of the building. Is that a clear or smoked glass front which will be transparent to the passerby and inner lights will show through at night or ? If you didn't know the plan, it would almost appear to be unfinished concrete.
