Icon 29 Se 2018

It looks quite svelte from some angles...

Beautiful...the form of the tower is great, even if the cladding is iffy. Definitely a landmark for the city.

Yes, but considering the utilitarian cladding that's going up, the curved balconies will bring much-needed esthetic appeal (compared to no balconies).

The interesting thing about the balconies is that they don't line up vertically, and instead have a curved vertical pattern, not unlike some new condo buildings in Toronto. Let's wait and see what this looks like all the way up.

What is the purpose of the projecting structures at around the 20th floor (that they have affixed the big "CLARIDGE" banner to)?

I assume they are some sort of temporary construction platform?

They seem to have just been built in the last few weeks.

I believe they are platforms so the crane can drop off/retrieve large bundles of materials rather than haul everything up the elevators.

Most skyscrapers under construction have one or 2 of these platforms at regular intervals up the building.... I have no idea why Claridge needs an entire floor of them.

After a certain height, there is a requirement for additional fall-protection (for loose items that accidentally fall). We're just not used to seeing these in Ottawa because we don't get tall buildings often

Also, yes they could be used for drop-offs and formwork etc.

Not doubting... but just for comparison this thread shows several Mega-talls under construction in NYC: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...91095&page=285

None of them have the "platform floor". There is netting a couple floors below the top (presumably to catch falling stuff), and there are occasionally single platforms on various floors all the way up the buildings (again presumably for drop-offs).

Anyway... I'm happy we can finally have a discussion about this here

I am still amazed that this building still has almost 20 floors more to go above what's already there (looks like they are on the 27th floor slab now). I also liked when they first put those platforms on the building, as the project looks more like a big dog, vs a mom n' pop build, if that makes sense. It's a symbol of Ottawa finally stepping through the door into the bigger leagues in terms of skyscraper construction (height/scale).

In the US they use a mesh with some hollow steel tubing... maybe it's a different regulation, or maybe just a different market offering:

Here's an example... 1 Vanderbilt a couple of days ago in NYC. Lower arrow is floor 19. Building at this point is similar in height to Icon, but clearly a different use of the mesh and platforms.

I'm just so happy we get to have a real skyscraper discussion about Ottawa

Would love to see something starting at Bayview before this one is completed! I think this tower will do just fine as our new tallest.

Icon Crane

The crane was raised Saturday for what one assumes is the final time.

Doesn't look like it actually... I'm "guessing" the top floor is 27 in this picture, but even if it's 26 or 29 same logic applies. I drew the first arrow from 24-27 to represent 3 floors... then just piled them up and looks like at least one more major raising of the crane is in order.

I noticed that they were preparing to do this last Friday...it's also cool to see a difference in height between this, and the other buildings in the area when viewed from different vantage points around the city...

just came in off bronson this morning and its taller than the William Logan Building now. Seems to be the tallest in that cluster south of the queensway near preston with 15-17 floors still to go

Yeah, the Sir William Logan building is the name I couldn't remember...It's cool to see Icon surpass it, and be noticeable from a distance...

If the above picture is accurate... the very top of the current crane should be pretty close to the roof height of the finished building..

It's looking huge now (the final crane height). Can see it poking out from all kinds of angles in the West and South ends.
