Here's a thread where Montreal won't be able to boast. I don't think we have any save for the ones in industrial building/grain elevators.

And Calgary surpasses all others. Calgary is home to the longest network in terms of total length. The system connects nearly every building over a few floors in the downtown core, some 100+ buildings in total. Nearly every recent project has been connected to the network, some projects with only one or two bridges, however others have more (the Bow will have 4 eventually)

There is one leading to the Palais des congrès. However, we mostly have tunnels in Montréal's underground network. Not as spectacular as skywalk, but still very useful.

Yes .. Calgary is th King of the Skywalk system. It makes winter a little more livable.

A friend of mine told me Calgary was also the first city to build them to connect downtown buildings. I am not sure it thats a fact, its just what someone told me.

Well it seems like a stretch to suggest that Calgary was the first city anywhere to build skywalks, I could believe that it was the first city to plan a comprehensive network of them. It makes sense in that regard. Always plenty of new construction expected in the downtown core ; cold temperatures in the winter ; the wealth to afford it.

This may be true, but it also robs the street of 'street life' and 'vitality' as you remove people from it. It's terrible in creating active street frontages, and true urban/inactive centres. It's one reason Vancouver has actively prevented their construction (and underground connections) for the past 20 years. They see the importance of an active street level, not removing people from it.

Sure the weather plays a big factor in Cal, Edm, etc., and any developer would be considered an idiot if they didn't connect to the network now, but that's the catch-22 of making it worse.

Skywalks are ugly. I think there are three in downtown Hamilton. Two of them plus Jackson Square allow one to get to most of the major destinations downtown without going outside: Fairclough Building, Sheraton Hotel, Stelco Tower, Standard Life Centre, Thompson Building, City Centre, Central Library, Copps Coliseum, Convention Centre, Hamilton Place, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Farmer's Market and three or four separate parking garages.
