I think that something like a Jack Astor's would be a great fit for the former Chatham Steet Grill space, especially with the University opening up downtown campuses close by, and the St Clair College campuses also in the neighbourhood.

I feel that eventually something will open up, like you said, with the University moving in and the Aquatic Centre down the street it has very good potential. It already lends itself to a pub style atmosphere and I think that could be a great fit, but whatever goes there could do well once the U moves in.

It's unbearable to have to wait for the University to unveil it's plans for the Armouries and the Windsor Star building. I'm very excited about these developments because I feel these are solid long term developments for downtown, call them anchors if you will, and I believe the 2 new university locations will foster new businesses in the core.

About 'the facts' and waiting for them, how do we get the facts on how the city is run if you can't audit it to get the facts? All the AG fiasco business has raised some flags for me at this point, that's all I'm trying to get at. I think it has done the same for most people, and it seems like the facts are being hidden from prying eyes.

I will agree though that it does seem that visibly there have been more changes to the city since Eddie has taken office than I can count leading up to his run as mayor. At the same time there has also be a lot of controversy over his iron fist type of leadership. It's definitely something that can and is often debated by many in the city at times.

The mayor and council need to step it up in regards to enticing jobs and employment to this city. You can replace all the medians you want in the city with fake putting grass that captures and holds on to everyone's cigarette butts that you want, but without employment for the people this city will continue to struggle and shrink.

The aquatic centre will fill an empty tract of land that's for sure, but it's difficult to tell if it will be a success. It was not also 'all gain' when it comes to the aquatic centre. There are neighbourhood facilities that will be shuttered and closed to accommodate the building of the aquatic centre. Some would argue that this in effect tears the heart out of a neighbourhood and essentially tries to 'big box' amenities into 1 location. It's difficult to argue against that because it is somewhat true.

I'm not trying to be a negative Nancy, but at the same time I'm not trying to drink the kool-aid without thinking about it a little first. I'm just trying to keep things in scope and be realistic. We're getting a new aquatic centre downtown but the city's losing people and there are no jobs for people here. We have roads falling apart and people's houses are still flooding when it rains, I bet when someone wakes up in the middle of the night with a basement full of shitty water they're not happy we're building an aquatic centre downtown. Or how about when someone cracks a rim, damages their tire and breaks a tie rod on their car driving down a major commuter road to work, are they going to be happy that the city built new medians with fake putting grass in them?

If we can put $72 million into an aquatic centre, would you think we could put more than $8 million into fixing sub-standard roads?
I think that I read that the roads will be redone on Wyandotte as well as reshaped and expanded sidewalks, which is great, because the road bed there is falling apart.

As for the audit fiasco, We'll just have to wait and see what comes out. I feel most of the controversy is false and intended to make the mayor look bad. Yeah, it's a big mess, but sometimes things are far more complicated and can look bad when all the facts are not available.

As for the Aquatic Centre, I'm sure it will be a huge success.

This is the biggest concern for me and why I am looking forward to the mayor's State of the City address this Friday. It seems it was delayed such that final details with respect to an announcement could be worked out. Hopefully it is good news on the jobs front.

Yes, I'm eagerly awaiting it as well. Do you know if we can tune in live and where that may be possible? Also, do you know what time it takes place?

I know it's gonna be on cable 11, I think at 1pm. I have a recording set so I can watch when I get home. I really feel like Eddie will have something big to announce, let's keep our fingers crossed for good news.

No arrests have been made.

The report on the story has been changed from 'arson' to 'suspicious'

Quote:
WINDSOR, Ont. -- A fire that caused $4 million worth of damage to an eastend plaza has become the focus of a criminal investigation, say police.

"The fire at this point is being listed as suspicious," said Windsor police arson Det. Glenn Gervais Thursday night. "It is a criminal investigation."

Aquatic Centre update

I took some pictures of the aquatic centre site.

a self-stiched pano of the site.

I saw quite a few dump trucks coming into the site and driving around downtown. Something I haven't seen in a while.

Which interior design was ultimately chosen for the aquatic centre?

i hope the night lighting for this building is something special. it would be nice to see something in sorts like Motor City Casino but with exterior flood lights. since its a very modern looking building and the crown jewel of downtown it would be nice to see a big deal made of it both during the day and at night.

I hope so too, I think it would go a long way in adding some much needed brightness and life in that area at night. Hopefully we get some more info regarding lightinging and landscaping soon, it has the potential to really make this something to be proud of.

I can't wait until they start the Barn, and when we'll finally see the exterior of the Palace torn off and brought down to structure.

Yeah, me too, It seems like nothing has been happening at the palace site for the last few weeks, I'm getting irritated waiting for something to happen.

As for the Barn, I just really hope everything works out and both parties Can come to an agreement so we Can get this project started. I'm starting to get a bit worried that it may not happen, which would be a big blow to the downtown revitalization efforts.
