Foreigners in China

Michael Chugani

Mr Michael Chugani is a Hong Kong-born American citizen who has worked for many years as a journalist in Hong Kong.
http://eastweek.my-magazine.me/index.php?aid=1731

I’m third generation Hong Kong Sindhi. My grandfather came from India and started a business here.

It’s got nothing to do with me growing up as an ethnic minority in Hong Kong. I speak fluent Cantonese and blend in quite easily.

My dad was thrown into a prison camp by the Japanese when he was in his early 20s—all foreigners were arrested as collaborators when the Japanese invaded.

My mom told me he was slated to be executed, but fortunately Hong Kong was liberated right before. He came back out a broken man though. He passed away when I was seven or eight. I don’t remember much about him.

When I was a kid, I asked my devout Hindu mother, “If God is just, why is he racist? Why are the darker-skinned people poor, and all the Caucasians rich?” She said, “God knows what he’s doing.” Which didn’t work for me.

I went to this awful Catholic school in Kowloon Tong for La Salle and St. Joseph dropouts called Regina’s. It doesn’t exist anymore.

I knew exactly what I wanted to do. As a kid, I could always write. I never went to university.

I did enroll in a course in journalism, but I didn’t feel like I learned anything, so I quit, and went traveling in Europe and Asia. I ended up at TVB as a young reporter.

Whenever I encounter injustice, it always gets me riled up. The only way to fight against injustice is to report about it. That’s what motivates me.

盛志文 Allan Zeman

Hong Kong Lan Kwai Fong Holdings chairman.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lan_Kwai_Fong

Chairman of Hong Kong Ocean Park .

..........

Allan Zeman is a Hong Kong business magnate. He was born in Germany, raised in Canada and is of Jewish descent.

In the early 1980s, Zeman felt that Hong Kong had no western restaurant that suited his needs, so in 1983 he opened California Restaurant in Lan Kwai Fong, a narrow street in Central. He bought the entire block in 1984 and thus launched his career as both an entertainment operator and property developer. Through Lan Kwai Fong Holdings Ltd, of which he is chairman, he drove the development of Lan Kwai Fong to be one of the most important bar and night life districts in Hong Kong. He is now said to own 65 percent of the district's properties.

....

In 2004, Zeman was invited by the then-Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Tung Chee-hwa, to become the chairman of Ocean Park. He managed to raise visitor numbers despite the opening of rival Hong Kong Disneyland, making the park more attractive and, remarkably, the park generated record profits.

A 2007 Forbes article, refers to Zeman as "Hong Kong's Mouse Killer" because of the success that Ocean Park is having while Hong Kong Disneyland struggles.

In 2001, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace in Hong Kong, in 2004, he was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star and in 2011 he was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal.

包致金 Kemal Bokhary

Kemal Bokhary is a judge in Hong Kong, Bokhary's father came to Hong Kong with the British Indian Army when Japan invade Hong Kong.

Bokhary himself was born in Hong Kong in 1947. He received his early education in the King George V School, Hong Kong and his legal education in London. Bokhary is married to High Court judge Verina Saeeda Bokhary (包鍾倩薇), with whom he has three daughters.

Out of the permanent judges of the Court of Final Appeal, Bokhary holds the record for the number of dissenting opinions he has written. He is also described as the "most hard-working" judge; during his thirteen years of tenure, he has heard 95% (299) of the 313 cases which came before the Court of Final Appeal, a higher proportion than his fellow judges.[6] Bokhary is considered the most liberal of all of the judges on the Court of Appeal, and legal scholars see his frequent dissents as "intellectually superior" to opinions written by the other judges. He thus became known as the "conscience of the court",
