Pedestrian, equestrian tunnel soon to connect Dimple Dell Park

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/neighbo...unnel.html.csp

Salt Lake City Metro's Dimple Dell Recreational Nature Park is a great place to ride horses, mountain bikes or just hike. Dogs are also welcome, as long as they are on a leash.

Now the park is about to get even better.

by Milton G. Moody

Known for its natural history study areas and native plants, the 644-acre park is long and narrow, running from 3000 East down the Dry Creek drainage to 300 East. Until now, park users had to cross busy 1300 East to get from the east part of the park to its western reaches.

But a cooperative project under way between the Utah Department of Transportation, Sandy City and Salt Lake County will result, among other things, in a tunnel beneath 1300 East. The 14-foot wide, 14-foot high passageway will allow equestrians, bikers and hikers access to both sides of the park just north of 10600 South without having to brave the hazards of auto traffic...

(Scott Sommerdorf l The Salt Lake Tribune) A group of equestrian riders heads west on one of Dimple Dell Park's trails toward an area that will soon have a tunnel built that will allow them to pass under 1300 East at Dimple Dell Park. When completed in November, the tunnel will allow equestrians, bikers and hikers to go from the park's east end to its west side without crossing the busy traffic lanes on 1300 East.

Standard Examiner, Wednesday September 22, 2010

OGDEN -- The federal government awarded a contract worth more than $20 million to The Boyer Co. for development and construction of 109,000 square feet of space for IRS operations within the historic Denver & Rio Grande building downtown.
The new facility will front 24th Street between Lincoln and Wall avenues. Construction is slated to begin in the fall, with completion scheduled for early 2012.

Jake Boyer, president of Boyer, said he is proud his company has been selected by the U.S. General Services Administration to undertake the project.

"We are very pleased the General Services Administration and Internal Revenue Service have entrusted The Boyer Company to develop and own this important new facility," he said in a prepared statement. "We are also very excited about this project's contribution to the continued redevelopment of downtown Ogden. The Boyer Company looks forward to partnering with the Internal Revenue Service, General Services Administration and the City of Ogden throughout the development process."

The city obtained options on behalf of the GSA for the purchase of the Denver & Rio Grande Building from Ogden Mall Development Co., which is affiliated with developer Gadi Leshem, and property at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and 24th Street owned by Dick Geisler, of St. George.

Those options will be transferred to Boyer, which will then buy the building and land.

Once work is completed, the federal government will lease the building from Boyer, Sally Mayberry, a GSA spokeswoman, said Wednesday.

Richard McConkie, the city's community and economic development director, estimated the GSA's contract with Boyer for development and construction for the new IRS building totals more than $20 million.

The new building will consolidate space from two other leased IRS facilities in the Ogden area.

Mayberry declined for security reasons to disclose the location of the two leased facilities or detail the number of IRS employees who will be transferred to the new facility. No additional IRS employees are expected to be hired as a result of the building project, she said.

Consolidation of multiple IRS functions into the new building will allow operations to become more efficient and cost effective because it will no longer be necessary to move personnel and work materials between two facilities, according to the GSA.

The facility will be adjacent to another IRS operation in the Scowcroft Building and 23rd Street and Wall Avenue.

The city has been working for several years to establish an additional IRS facility downtown, said John Patterson, who is Ogden's chief administrative officer.

"The key component of revitalization in a community is to have downtown employees," he said Wednesday. "This will bring hundreds of jobs downtown."

The agreement between GSA and Boyer for the new IRS building is significant for the city's economy, said Mayor Matthew Godfrey.

"This phase moving forward opens the door for other (IRS) phases with the potential of thousands of additional jobs," he said.

Henry Slaughter, director of the IRS' Ogden Service Center, said in a prepared statement he's pleased the agency will have another building downtown.

"The IRS is happy to be involved in this project and to be a part of the fabric contributing to the revitalization efforts in Ogden's historic neighborhoods," he said.

The new facility will feature state-of-the-art construction that will achieve a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design Silver certification. LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system in which a building is designed and built using strategies intended to improve performance in energy savings, water efficiency, or carbon dioxide emissions reduction.

The new IRS facility will incorporate high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, water-efficient fixtures, energy-conserving lighting and the use of regional and recycled building materials.

"Sustainable development is an opportunity to do the right thing from the point of view of the private sector and the American economy," Susan Damour, GSA's administrator for the Rocky Mountain Region, said in a prepared statement. "This is a chance for government to not only lead an industry but introduce best practices that will have a positive and long-term impact on our country."

As part of this project, the Denver & Rio Grande Building and loading dock will be structurally reinforced to resist earthquakes and will receive a new roof.

The building exterior will be repaired and cleaned, and a new, efficient heating and cooling system will be installed. The existing original windows, doors and moldings will be refurbished, with replicate materials replacing missing or damaged items throughout the building and dock.

Boyer has hired SmithGroup, FFKR Architects, Great Basin Engineering and Big-D Construction to undertake the building project.

Even though it is called a "job" fair, the Montage Deer Valley is looking to fill "career" openings next Wednesday and Thursday.
Before joining the company, Montage Deer Valley's Director of Human Resources Keli Christensen says she stayed at one of the California properties as a guest. She was looking to treat her husband and didn't know much about the brand. What she experienced made her in want to know more about the company.

"I was blown away," she said. "All the way through the staff made a wonderful personal connection and created memorable experiences. I was captured."...

Merit Medical Systems Inc., a maker of disposable medical products, is poised to begin construction of a fourth building on its South Jordan campus.

The $45 million, 240,000-square-foot structure is expected to take two years to complete and will create approximately 350 construction jobs during that time, said spokeswoman Anne-Marie Wright.

“We’ve been growing very rapidly, and this is something that we have been planning for quite a while,” she said, adding the new building eventually will house an additional 700 new employees who are expected to be brought onboard over the next five to 10 years...

I'm pretty sure that the Museum of Natural Curiosity has not started it's construction yet, as they haven't gathered in quite enough of the funding and there have been no ground breakings. The Museum is a major project, and I would imagine a lot of splash in the media for it's construction upstart, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm super curious to find out now what that building site is that SLC Projects is talking about, so I'll ask around.

Projects, does this first pic look like the location that you were talking about?

Salt Lake City-based Big-D Construction is part of a consortium that has been awarded a $1.2 billion contract to build a data center for U.S. intelligence agencies at Camp Williams.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced late Friday that it had selected the joint venture of Balfour Beatty/DPR/Big-D to build the 1.5 million-square-foot facility for the National Security Agency.

Big D’s team was one of five finalists for the coveted contract. Two of the other four bidders also involved Salt Lake City companies. Jacobsen Construction had teamed up with Turner Construction of New York City and Kiewit Building Group of Omaha. Okland Construction had formed a partnership with New Jersey-based Skanska USA.

The timing was great for a Utah company to have a prominent role in a major construction project sure to include thousands of local subcontractors among the predicted work force of 7,000 to 10,000, said Spencer Eccles, executive director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development.

“City Creek [Centre] construction is winding down in downtown Salt Lake City and this is winding up,” he said. “With all of the road projects out there, this type of project is critical for what we’re trying to do. They all add to the vitality of the state.”

An Army Corps of Engineers news release offered no explanations for the selection.

Construction of the data center is expected to be completed by June 2012. It will include 100,000 square feet of computer space, where the country’s intelligence agencies will collect data to be used by the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies to protect national security networks and issue warnings about cyber-security threats. That core will be surrounded by more than 900,000 square feet of technical support and administrative space, Army Corps spokeswoman Katisha Draughn said in the release. In addition, support facilities include an electrical substation, a vehicle inspection building and visitor control center, fuel and water storage structures and a chiller plant.

The whole facility will occupy 200 acres of Camp Williams, which is along the Salt Lake County-Utah County line west of Interstate 15.

Main Street mainstay starting to re-emerge

By Jared Page
The Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY — At least twice a day, Carlton Christensen makes the block-and-a-half walk between the Regent Street parking structure and his office at Zions Bank on the corner of Main Street and South Temple.

Along the way, the Salt Lake City councilman passes the site of countless childhood memories. Talking about them brings emotion to his deep voice.

Amid the dozen or so downtown construction projects under way as part of City Creek Center, a Main Street mainstay is starting to re-emerge.

A TRAX train glides into the City Center station in Salt Lake City. The ZCMI facade, right, is being reconstructed. (Ravell Call, Deseret News)

The ZCMI facade is being put back into place as the storefront for Macy's in downtown Salt Lake City. The historic ZCMI facade an anchor of the 20-acre retail, residential and office development of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"For me, it's a personal thing," Christensen said of the ZCMI facade, a staple of downtown since the 1870s. "My father worked for ZCMI for about 26 years before he died."

Christensen recalls spending his days working with his father, stocking shelves and working the old freight elevator "that you had to move by pulling on the cable to start it."

"Having the facade come back and be restored in an integrated fashion is exciting for me," he said. "It's a huge element in my growing-up years."

Tom Smart, Deseret News

Crews have been reassembling the facade since July, though it likely will be early next year before it's complete, said Dale Bills, spokesman for City Creek Reserve Inc., a development arm of the LDS Church.

"The steel framework on the east side of Main Street is complete, and technicians are now attaching restored elements of the original facade," Bills said.

Several of the facade's familiar pillars already are in place, and the rest of the cast-iron front will go up "concurrently with construction of the core and shell of the Macy's store," Bills said.

The three-story ZCMI facade was carefully disassembled in fall 2007 and was put into storage so the old Macy's building could be demolished. The new store is being built about 25 feet to the north at approximately 15 S. Main.

The facade was part of the original Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution, which was founded in March 1868.

"I think (reusing the historic facade) is a smart move by Macy's," Christensen said. "This is America's first department store. … You look at all the department stores nationwide and how those have evolved, and to have the first one here in Salt Lake … is an important element that's now part of their heritage."

Ravell Call, Deseret News

The original ZCMI facade was constructed in three phases in 1876, 1880 and 1901, according to city planning documents. The structure to be reinstalled is both a remnant of that facade and a re-creation from the 1970s, when the ZCMI Center was built.

The May Co. purchased the store in 1999 and converted it into a Meier & Frank. In 2006, Federated Department Stores bought May Co., and Utah's Meier & Frank stores — including the downtown location — became Macy's.

Salt Lake City's Historic Landmark Commission had to sign off on the proposed reuse of the ZCMI facade because it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Though the facade will be a familiar site, the new store it will decorate will have a different look than the previous Macy's. The new building will be the same height as the facade, leaving the decorative peak atop the facade to stand alone as it did in 1910 — unlike the most recent reconstruction in the 1970s.

The 150,000-square-foot Macy's store is on schedule for a March 2012 opening.

Southern Metro - Thanksgiving Point - Adobe announces new facility to be built in Lehi

KSL.Com
By Sam Penrod

LEHI -- Software giant Adobe made a major announcement Friday. The company unveiled it will build a campus in Lehi, which will bring many more jobs to the state.

Adobe announced a couple of months ago it would build in Utah. Now the company has announced it will set up shop in Lehi near the Cabela's store off I-15.

At an event Friday morning, Adobe brought its employees from its campus in Orem to celebrate the new location.

Last year, Adobe bought Orem-based Omniture for $1.8 billion and will move the company's presence in Utah from Orem to Lehi.

The company expects to add as many as 350 more jobs with the likelihood of bringing another thousand to the state over the next decade.

Adobe says it likes what Utah has to offer and believes it will be a leader in the state's economic future.

"We have 620 employees currently in the state of Utah," said Brad Rencher, vice president and general manager of Omniture Adobe. "These are software engineers, sales reps, really well paying jobs. Our average salary is about 175 percent of the average in Utah County. It truly is an opportunity for us to become the foundation for the broader technology community in Utah."

Lehi City leaders believe Adobe will be a catalyst in bringing not only more high-tech jobs to the area but is optimistic other businesses will get a boost, such as restaurants and hotels.

The facility is planned to be 230,000 square feet. Construction is expected to begin sometime next year with the facility opening in the fall of 2012.
