During its first meeting of 2014, City Council began making preparations for the tallest building in Philadelphia, the proposed 59-story, 1,121-foot Comcast Innovation and Technology Center, unveiled last week. Councilman Bill Greenlee introduced a handful of Comcast-related bills on behalf of Council President Darrell Clarke.

The bills would:

Rezone the property from CMX-4 to CMX-5, the least-restrictive commercial zoning classification,*

Adjust some regulations of the zoning code to allow Comcast’s project to be built by right,

Permit Comcast and development partner Liberty Property Trust to construct and maintain an extension of the Suburban Station transit concourse across 18th Street,

Allow encroachments in the public right-of-way, including benches, security bollards, and bike racks,*

And authorize the Department of Streets to raise portions of 18th Street and to raise and widen portions of Cuthbert Street between 18th and 19th.

Maybe one of you, or more than one can collaborate, to create a diagram. In the old days when we had people cranking out diagrams, someone would work on the diagram and post them to the forum as they went. This allowed the forum to help with detail and accuracy. Maybe someone could do that with this tower and some of the other exciting towers going up right now.

Just getting started, and understanding the process, can be the toughest part.

Can anyone answer the following questions?
1) What software package(s)can be used to create diagrams?
2) What format(s) is required for publishing?
3) What is the process to get diagrams approved and published?

1) Sketchup, Autocad, Inventor.

2) Just take a screenshot, and upload it on Flickr.

If you use Skethup, there is an option in the top toolbar to add location, if you choose that you can place the model on the block it belongs. Then if you click file and preview in google earth you can then see the model in google earth with the rest of the philly skyline from any view you want. That's what I did

I'm a bit concerned that the skyline might start looking too much like Frankfurt though. Am I the only one who thought of this?

Huge buildings like this will always seem out of place when you look at a rendering, because they haven't earned their place in the skyline yet. But after months of site preparation, months of foundation digging, and then years of gradual climbing, they become a natural part of the city. The construction becomes so normal that it's strange once they're actually complete.

This building looks much shorter than it is, not just because of the large east-west dimension, but also because of the horizontal structural elements on the outside. They create the appearance of individual stories, even though each one is 4 stories (probably 60-70 feet).

Can't wait to see some digging!

Yeah man, you totally nailed it and described perfectly the evolution of a large landmark structure. I also extrapolated your idea to the timeline and memory span of human behavior in daily life as well. Killer points.

I have a rather selfish question directed towards those of you with lots of construction and development knowledge. I currently view the Comcast tower out my window on a direct line from the west (I am on the south side of Arch Street). Will the new tower be directly in line with the existing tower so that, once built, the existing tower will be completely blocked from my view? Or, hopefully, will the new tower be slightly to the left (north) or right (south) of the existing tower so that I may get a slightly layered view?

This should answer your question...the existing tower will be blocked from your view.

I am not a photoshop person, so please take this request with a grain of salt:

When making mockups of the new Comcast tower, possible to include the FMC tower, too?

Also, for what it's worth, my favorite view of the city remains the stretch of 95 southbound between the Aramingo and Girard exits. Very few photos exist for obvious reasons but if you've driven that stretch of 95 from NE or Bucks Co, you know what I'm talking about.
