Why were so many little details blurred out, like license plates, faces, etc...?

This is what the Republicans want to turn the United States into - a place where a few wealthy elite rule over the millions of impoverished masses.

Is there any way to provide us with the direct link to the 2nd Sao Paulo image that was from Google Street View...that is incredible how the bridge was built directly above those homes.

Maybe these homes have been built after the bridge ?

Interesting pics, btw.

The vast majority or Brazilians are not Impoverished masses. The overwhelming majority of Brazilians do not in shantytowns and slums. Many do, but most do NOT. Brazil has a huge and growing middle class. I know all of this first hand having lived there for much of the last 18 years-first as a Missionary who for 2 years, worked quite extensively in favelas(we didnt call them that where I lived btw-people in Porto Alegre-a city that doesnt have many favelas, referred to them as the "Morro"(hill), or "Vila", or "Beco"(alley)) and people there do not roll around in their squalor. Most actually work in low paying jobs and piece together their homes the best they can.

I appreciate these pictures because it represents work that remains to be done in order to acheive greater income equality not only in Brazil, but in many parts of the world. Sadly even many cities in developed nations still have a ways to go to achieve great quality of life for all of its residents.

This is startling & tragic, to say the least. Let me ask a stupid question. Do horses roam freely? I have seen places where dogs roam freely and some livestock, such as chickens. But, have never seen horses roam freely.

Parts of U.S. cities aren't much better than this.

Diamondpark, thanks for clarifying that this isn't as widespread as people might think.

Proof Sheet - the location is around 10km North East of central Sao Paulo, coordinates are 23°30'52.17"S 46°32'45.59"W. Copy and past the coordinates in Google Earth or Google Maps.

Very interesting pictures.

I couldn't help it but as I was looking at these pics, the song "Aquarela do Brasil" was going through my head...

Urban Decay?? o0

I'll show a little of what happens now in São Paulo and Rio. Both cities are under a process of development (just like all the country) and not in decay.

It's Paraisopolis. The largest of SP.
Is being urbanized.

The neighborhood where the slum is located:

GersonLDN - brazilian forumer

Paraisopolis in 2008

F. Stankus at Flickr.com

Paraisolopolis already:

tchelllo - brazilian forumer

A new high school, part of the urbanization project

All those will be demolished

tchelllo-brazilian forumer

Some projects for the neighborhood:

Leisure Centre in a area already urbanized

São Paulo Old Downtown

This is a building in the old downtown - The Luz district.
will be demolished thankt to the "Nova Luz Project" which is demolishing entire blocks and restoring historic buildings.

Many of these buildings will be demolished.

São Paulo has problems like any other metropolis in a developing country.

Medellin-Colombia:

India:

Portugal

China:

Madrid-Spain

Jakarta-Indonesia

Mexico City

Seul - South Korea

Developed countries also had urban problems:

LFelippe, thanks for putting this into perspective. These tragic images are a reminder to consider those in need. Poverty is a worldwide problem. It doesn't belong to select countries and cities. It lies in our backyard, no matter where we live. We can open our eyes and see that it is in our own cities, regardless of where we live.

who lives in that mess in Madrid or Portugal? Maybe gypsies/roma, or immigrants who aren't legally in the country?

Personally, I would consider squatter camps in developed countries with elaborate social services to be a different phenomenon than the slums or favelas of Latin America.
