But only if you're facing the front. I'm talking about the sides next to the statue, the cladding goes all the way to ground level.

Good question, there are two different versions, one being on the sales force tower website.

Sorry for the spam, but there's two versions of the same entry. This is all really confusing, seeing as there is a lot of renderings and concepts of the Salesforce Tower.

Salesforce at Sunset - 01/15/2017

A preview of what the sun's refection will look like when the Salesforce building is complete. As the sun moves from north/south, south/north the reflection will change with the seasons. (view is from the Essex Fox Plaza, 27th floor).

It's going to look like a flaming torch at times!

One of the renderings seems to suggest that too:

speaking of the entry, it looked like some panelling for the back wall of the lobby had already been installed, tho I couldn't tell from a distance whether this would be what one sees on the surface when everything is done

I think this is it, I've seen it on the official Salesforce tower video. Can't wait!

"101 1st street" is obviously just a placeholder name for what an address sign on the building would look like, probably the architects didn't know what the exact address would be

It'll probably just say 'Salesforce Tower' - just as it says 'Salesforce East' and 'Salesforce West' for 350 Mission and 50 Fremont across the street.

It just makes me dissapointed that they couldn't put an observation deck on one of the top 10 floors. The whole building is office space yet they couldn't set aside one elevator or entrance for an observation deck?

^^They could. They didn't want to--for all the reasons I will NOT rehash here.

It seems pretty clear that owners and developers are not enthralled with the idea of such decks for whatever reason. Your best hope may be to try to convince the Planning Dept. to give extra points when such buildings are seeking approval for having a deck (vs other forms of the required public open space). I wish you luck but I think you have a tough task ahead.

But isn't San Francisco famous for being "The City That Knows How"? I do believe that SF will eventually get a world-class observatory on some future supertall during one of the next boom cycles.

^^^Yes, when such a space makes sense and it is economically feasible.
