My bad. It's a pic I have on my photobucket, so I thought I'd post it. Didn't realize it was outdated.

Noticed this on Google Streetview...I love old International Scout II's. I love the old pickup against the backdrop of new Austin.

No foundations, yet, I don't think.

I doubt many people realize the tallest building between downtown Austin and the north side of San Antonio is about to rise there.

WHAT!?! We need to rally the community and stop this in it's tracks. Next thing you know, they'll be putting rail south of the river.

Don't joke about that...that's the last thing we need. Like I said earlier, I think the real genius of this project was how quietly it has proceeded to this point. No article in the Statesman (that I recall) or any major moves by the developer. I think the low key aspect of this project is why its gotten to groundbreaking without any major protest or crazy outcry from the 78704 community. Hopefully it stays that way, because this building could start a good precedent.

I say we just make a rendering of a 800ft. tall building, place it on the site where Hooters is located, and piss off the HOA & Nimby people that live in the area.

Could we convince Jude to post it on DAB?

It's funny that NIMBYs don't complain about crap like Hooters, but they complain over mutli-use developments.

But Hooters, Taco Cabana and McDonald's add so much to the fabric of the community!

I believe putting yourself in the shoes of other people is good and viewing problems or issues from multiple perspectives makes for better decisions. However, I am a logical person and putting myself in the shoes of someone who cares more about a Hooters or Taco Cabana than reducing parking lots and improving the community, I just don't get it.

Those businesses could easily move back into the ground floor retail if they so desired. I can understand fighting for something like PeterPan, that is an Austin icon, locally owned, and you can't just replace it in some random VMU project. But generic run of the mill restaurants are a dime a dozen and can easily move back into the location that is displacing them.

I do understand places can be priced out of the new development, an example of both sides of this being Lamar Plaza. Still why wasn't there more NIMBY against the Lamar Plaza redo when some of the long-time local businesses would be priced out? I am for the project, but I just can't understand the motivation for which projects cause a stink with certain groups besides solely the height of the building and maybe it is that simple. I still can't believe the Catherine managed to fly under the radar.

They're setting the column forms there. I don't see any concrete pumpers, buckets or concrete trucks, though.

Smile

I was driving down Barton springs yesterday and saw a pretty significant structure to my left( I was heading to the intersection with congress), is that the Catherine? If so, the thing is growing at a decent pace( and we need pics )

^^I have a feeling that what you were actually looking at is the garage/ballroom expansion for the Hyatt Regency. These three photos were taken May 28 and it has grown substantially since then.
