Just because we have lower rates than other countries doesn't mean it needs to be ignored.

That wasn't my point. Canadian cities (all of them) are extremely safe and arguing that X city has a murder rate .20 higher than Y city sounds kind of silly. At least for someone coming from a place where you can find some of the most dangerous cities in the world as well as some of the safest.

city of Montreal is 1.7million! and the Island close to 2 millions.. so in Montreal Island we had 30 murders in 2012 for a population of 1.95 million

How do you figure you can't compere a cities rate to a national average? We do it all the time. Also where are you getting your stats from that would put you in the top 15-20%? I'm not saying your wrong I'm just curious where your getting your info from.

A man injured in an assault last year has died in hospital. If ruled a homicide, Thunder Bay will have had 7 homicides committed in 2012, tied with 1984 (rate of 5.79) and 1992 (5.38) for most homicides (since 1981). Based on our 2011 census population the homicide rate would be 5.77, just below the rate in 1984.

Yesterday, we had a town house meeting focusing on crime and poverty among First Nations people. With several racially motivated crimes committed against First Nations people in this city in the past two months, many First Nations people in Thunder Bay no longer feel safe here. Most of the homicide victims of 2012 were First Nations.

Thunder Bay is now, officially, at 7 for 2012. A woman's assault charge was upgraded to second degree murder yesterday, after the victim died of his injuries in hospital.

part of the reason that we achieved such rates in the the first place is because we are culturally horrified by polities in which homicide is commonplace.

it's not "cute" to police the boundaries, and to fret over any possible backsliding. it's civilized. we lag far behind switzerland and denmark and italy and norway and many other countries. it doesn't really matter what the world's most murderous places consider normal.
