Arrow The Chicago of the North

THE EXCHANGE DISTRICT
____________________
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Winnipeg's Exchange District is one of the most intact early 20th century commercial districts
in North America. By the turn of the 20th century, Winnipeg had become a major railway centre
and the commercial gateway to Western Canada. The city quickly grew into Canada's third largest
and became known as the "Chicago of the North." The Exchange District covers an area of 20
blocks just north of Winnipeg's Downtown and contains a large collection of elegant brick buildings
and warehouses. In 1997, the Exchange District was designated a National Historic Site.

Wow that's a lot of brick. That must have really been something when it was first around.

Great pics but I was taken aback by the lack of people pics lol.

WOW! I had no idea this existed in Winnipeg! And it does look a bit like Chicago. Thanks!

Amazing shots Flar! Despite the weather, you've given forumers a glimpse of what the Exchange has to offer...

you managed to capture both the glory and sad dilapidation of Winnipeg's architectural heritage. So many great buildings waiting for a bit of the imagination that put them up in the first place.

Holy shit that was unexpected, that's beautiful. It's rare to see density like this outside of downtown in American cities. Go winnipeg!

Great thread. Really makes me wish I had stopped for the night last time I was there rather than barreling right through. Kudos.

These are stunning! The detail of sharpness in your photos is amazing. What lens did you use if I may ask?

Great job Flar! There is a lot of quality in that built environment. It is good to see some rehabs going on though. I like the big outsatnding friezes on top of buildings in pictures 5, 7, 11 and 22. I never tire of that architecture. It is soothing and well proportioned. 22 looks like a hotel, a hell of a nice building.
