I for one can't believe we're waiting for this development to happen (or any other)...with the economy booming and credit for commercial construction flowing so freely you would think this would be open-and-shut.

I'd love to see this hotel built--but the way things are currently, we ought to be celebrating every existing business that survives--we can worry about new construction later.

Nope. Recessions (and worse) are historically key times when great buildings are built and maintained. This has been true for hundreds of years.

Yeah...Dundasguy has it--there are countless examples of buildings from the past several decades that died on the drawing boards because of recession. Doesn't anyone remember the long-standing "stump" in Downtown T.O. that was once to be the Bay-Adelaide Center?

The only examples I can think of that go against this are the various "New Deal" projects launched by FDR--essentially a past example of "economic stimulus".

The current TH&B Station, think built in 1933, was built during the depression. I think it was built with private money.

I encountered several very noteable buildings built during the great depression in the US on my tour of Washington and Oregon a couple summers ago. Absolutely spectacular lodges, hotels, etc. Proportions were huge, dimensions were perfect, we were all just marvelling at the architecture.

Ryan, you should read The Fountainhead when you get a chance.

It's easy to be a critic.

OMG! Do you think that pseudo-intellectual Harlequin Romance is a serious expose on misunderstood architects?

I don't know anyone over the age of 22 who takes that book seriously. Go ahead and read it if you haven't already, Ryan. It's good for a laugh.

Oh yes I forgot, going down on Richard Florida is now the "intellectual" thing for you guys. Don't forget your Birkenstocks and granola bars.

Judging by the tone of your posts, you don't appear to be over the age of 12.
