The core/elevator shaft is not centered like most buildings. It is actually pushed all the way to the west side. I am guessing that they wanted to give all the apartments a water view.

This was taken this morning. It's not that bad, looks like an AnyTower you would find in Vancouver, San Diego, or Miami.

The slanted crown definitely helps the look of it. Jasper doesn't look too bad, but the name is pretty bad.

Yeah, but these are some morbidly obese vertical lines, unfortunately.

The toad on the hill--more obvious than ever that it's the worst, and this is one of its best angles.

Yeah, it's the ugliest of the current crop by far.

And it's got an appropriately ugly name, too--just who the hell thought "The Jasper" was a good moniker for a residential skyscraper in a swanky district of San Francisco? What's next, The Cletus? The Rufus?

The view from the west is its only particularly bad angle, it is just sad that is the one that most people will see.

I posted the above on 9/18/12; unfortunately for me, that's exactly what happened. Jasper is the worst tower on Rincon Hill from any angle and you're right, the west side facing me is awful.

Look at my new photos of 340-350 Fremont--the back is really beautiful! The photos of 375 (399) Fremont show how great the crown is turning out to be, as do the photos of Lumina. Those projects all make this one look even worse, imo.

Found a floorplan in the planning commission's summary, it looks like the two center white panels are to cover the core which is on the west edge of the building, but the two outer stripes are there because they decided to put widowless bathrooms and closets on the exterior walls. Really dumb.

The ugly duckling of the new wave, with an appropriately ugly name.

"Where do you live?"
Uh, The Jasper.
"Oh."

I used to hate 45 Lansing...uh, I mean Jasper, after seeing how it turned out in reality. But it's kind of grown on me. In the way that a tumor grows on you, and you get used to it.

Don't get me wrong, we need the units and that's a great area to build them. Aesthetics aside, I'm glad it is being built. It's just that the other new towers managed to look a whole hell of a lot better. The Jasper looks especially tragic from the west, which is to say, just about every San Franciscan sees its ugliest side.

The east and north sides really aren't that bad. It's that west side that really stinks. Perhaps someone will build a tower to the west that will eventually block that side.

The south side from the freeway or South Beach area is no stunner either; it really detracts from all of the other towers and is the kind of building that helps fuel an anti tower backlash.
