I can see this project from my window, but progress is so slow that it's hardly visible. How long can it take so long to take down a concrete parcade? There is nothing to be careful with the structure itself...

Being safe takes time, since this is happening in a public area. Remember what happened when that wall fell at Helmcken and Hornby?

Regarding concrete demolition... Is concrete recycled in any way?

I didn't yet live in Vancouver when that happened, so first time I hear about that. There seems to be several videos of this badly done demolition on Youtube. Thanks for the tip!

Absolutely is. We do it all of the time for LEED credits.

Pretty lucky nobody was hurt, and that was a 1-2 storey building, about as small as it gets. I'm sure there were many extra safety steps put into place after that.

In 1974 I posted this image on the blog. It took a dozen HB pencils to fill in the cards.

Wow, that's one ugly building that used to stand where Shangri-La is nowadays!

Actually, Shangri-La now stands where that dark coloured building in the background stands in this picture (1981):

and then later in the 1980s it was this empty lot:

Actually Klazu was right. The 2 pictures are of different intersections. The building in the 1981 pic (the one behind the black & white building) is the same one as seen in the earlier parkade shot and is now the site of Shangri-La. The black & white building is the current site of the Terasen building and is out of the picture in the second shot from Georgia & Thurlow

I'm aware the pics I posted are of two different intersections but I thought Klazu was saying the parkade was where Shangri-la is now and the parkade was such an ugly building. My mistake.

When is completion scheduled for this one? Q1 2015? They'll probably be digging the hole for a solid 9-12 months as well right?
