I would like this proposal more if it was 5x its proposed height :p .

But in seriousness, it's a very clean proposal and I do genuinely like it. However, if it were up to me, I would get a little more liberal with the green terraces.

The modular housing at the Olympic Village station is almost completed.

I think this has turned into one of the best areas of Vancouver.

The scale is excellent - great mix of low-rise commercial remains up the hill still. Interesting coffee shops and bakery's scattered in between.

Awesome area of town.

Great picture as always Klaus. You can hardly see where Concert's 5th building will go.

The Birds sculptures, which had to be removed from Olympic Village last November
and sent to Calgary and China for repairs, are currently in Calgary getting a fresh coat of paint before returning to Vancouver.

I didn't even notice they were gone, I guess it's been a while since I was down there.

No.

Maybe there are, but will probably cost you both your arms and legs.

This time round, let's properly fence these birdies from yahoo skateboarders.

Well, welding aluminum was apparently a specialized skill when the Fast Cats were built in North Vancouver
- there was a learning curve for the workers to get clean welds.

I guess those workers or that skillset disappeared from the local industrial welding shops / workplaces (?)

Most of the damage was probably done by kids climbing on it. But if you read the history, that's what they are there for. The artist wanted people to "interact" with them. It's disappointing they were gone for so long, but a fence is not the answer.

I'm no metallurgist, but shouldn't they have cast it in steel or something hard if they wanted it climbed on? Aluminum's not exactly the most durable metal.

The paint and covering was rubbed off, it's not like they were dented.

From the news article (VancouverCourier):

The sculptures, which weigh 3,500 pounds each, were removed in mid-November as they were showing signs of severe damage and disrepair, due to the weather as well as people climbing, riding bikes and skateboarding on large sections of the birds.

First shipped to Calgary for repairs, the birds were then sent to China for re-casting in aluminum.

Anyone else find it hilarious that the city pushed Olympic village as a luxury area equivalent to Yaletown and then turned around a few years later and built modular housing there?
