HAMILTON, ON – March 20, 2015 – Today, the City of Hamilton’s building division announced it has issued Ontario’s first six-storey wood frame building permit for a new hotel coming to the city’s east end.
The project, a 209-unit Sandman Hotel by Northland Properties and located at 560 Centennial Parkway, will include an indoor pool and two restaurants. Pre-construction on-site servicing work started on site Monday, March 16 and excavation and foundation work will be starting on Monday, March 23, 2015.
Ontario revised its building code legislation on January 1, 2015 allowing wood-frame residential and office buildings up to six storeys, with additional fire safeguards such as non-combustible stairwell materials and combustion-resistant roofs. Prior to January 1, the limit was four storeys. British Columbia was the first province to introduce six-storey wood frame construction.
“This is a significant step forward for our community and I’m thrilled that we were the first Ontario municipality to sign off on a permit for this new hotel project,” said Ed VanderWindt, Chief Building Official for the City of Hamilton.
