I’ve been trying to research for a while what is being built at the McLean metro station between the station and the new Capital One tower.

It's the Wegman's + conference center/theater. Future towers will sit on top.

"The expansion of RTC West, JBG Smith’s mixed-use project less than quarter-mile walk from the future Reston Town Center Metro Station, is getting closer to final approval. The Fairfax County Planning Commission unanimously approved the project, which adds up to 576 multifamily units, 700,000 square feet of office space and 1.4 million square feet of new development to the existing office park, on Thursday night.

The developer plans to embark on a multiphase expansion for the area, which is bounded by the Washington & Old Dominion Trail to the North and Reston Town Center Parkway to the east, over the next several years. The site is currently home to three six-story office buildings, two parking garages, and retail tenants like Cooper’s Hawk Winery, Nando’s Peri-Peri and honeygrow.

A timeline for the project is pending approval..."

Reston Town Center

I took this photo last week of a residential building under construction at the eastern end of the Reston Town Center, across the street from the Hyatt.

Purple Line to Tysons

Greater Greater Washington has an interesting post today examining possibly extending the Purple line from its future terminus in Bethesda to Tysons.

The best way to build a Purple Line link between Bethesda and Tysons Corner

By DW Rowlands
March 1, 2019
Greater Greater Washington

"Although the Purple Line between Bethesda and New Carrollton isn't expected to open until late 2022, transit advocates frequently talk about the possibility of extending it. The Purple Line is the area's first major circumferential transit project, and it is expected to have high ridership. It also connects to a series of densely-spaced job centers and residential areas, and extensions would benefit from through-running to these areas.

The most common proposed extension for the Purple Line is from Bethesda to Tysons Corner. Intuitively, this is the most obvious target for an extension: Tysons has the largest concentration of jobs in the region outside of downtown DC by a factor of two, making it a major commuting destination. While the Silver Line connects it to downtown DC and to Reston, a circumferential connection would make it more transit-accessible to suburban commuters..."

By Washington Business Journal
March 11, 2019

"Comstock Holdings Cos. Inc. has closed a franchise agreement with Marriott International Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) to bring a Renaissance hotel to Reston Station.

The 250-key Renaissance Reston Station will be a part of Reston Station Promenade, an extension of the original Reston Station project that sits atop the Wiehle-Reston East Metro. The hotel building, to be topped by 80 luxury condominium units, is expected to deliver in 2022 on a site bounded by Reston Station Boulevard, Wiehle Avenue and Sunset Hills Road. It is being designed by Nunzio Marc DeSantis Architects..."

"The Spring Hill station has lagged some of Tysons' other Metro stops in development and is still largely surrounded by car dealerships, but four projects each over 1.5M SF are now planned for the area around the station.

The latest plans come from D.C. gas station magnate Joe Mamo, who filed an application for a 2M SF mixed-use project at 8520 and 8526 Leesburg Pike, the Washington Business Journal reports..."

New details emerge for redevelopment of office park near future Reston Metro station

By Alex Koma
Washington Business Journal
May 10, 2019

"Plans are coming together for Tishman Speyer’s massive redevelopment of a Reston office park into seven mixed-use buildings virtually adjacent to a future Metro station.

The New York-based developer is pitching a 2 million-square-foot project to replace two office buildings on a 14-acre site near the intersection of the Dulles Toll Road and Reston Parkway. Known as “Reston Crossing,” the development is one of many planned along the path of the Silver Line’s expansion out to Dulles, immediately adjacent to the future Reston Town Center station..."

Senior towers unlike any other in Greater Washington earn final Fairfax County approval

By Alex Koma – Staff Reporter, Washington Business Journal
7 hours ago

Plans for a high-rise senior living campus in Tysons are moving ahead, with a design that marks a notable first for the area.

Fairfax County’s Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the project, dubbed “The Mather,” at a meeting Tuesday. It’s set to consist of two towers — one 27 stories, the other 18 — within the Arbor Row development, just behind Tysons Galleria.
