Kind of random question, but is that the heart of downtown SA, pictured? Is downtown SA centered around anything in particular?

From a semi outsider's perspective, I would say San Antonio's downtown has several hearts. There is of course the Alamo which the city is famous for. It broke ground in 1744. There's a large plaza around it and there are a lot of shops and restaurants nearby. There's also the Riverwalk which snakes around downtown with a lot of restaurants and shops lining it. And there's Main Plaza near the San Fernando Cathedral. That cathedral broke ground in 1738. And there is the Rivercenter Mall. San Antonio's downtown is still really dense. They haven't really lost many buildings.

@ Paul in S.A. TX

Hey, Paul, I share your enthusiasm for the smaller projects and also anticipate the bigger ones. Do you know of any bigger ones on the horizon, except, maybe the Convention Center addition? I need to research to see what they are going to do in lieu of the axed Joske's hotel proposal.

The Joske project is being moved and reinvented so I wouldn't say it is dead.

University of the Incarnate Word planned downtown medical school.
http://therivardreport.com/a-downtow...er-to-reality/
Quote
A medical school in the heart of San Antonio’s downtown that would share a campus with a public magnet school for health care careers took a big step forward Monday night. The school would serve, geographically and ecumenically, as the center of a growing downtown medical district by knitting together six different public and private hospitals and clinics.

San Antonio Independent School District trustees voted unanimously at the district’s board meeting Monday to enter into a non-binding agreement with the University of Incarnate Word to lease three acres of the former Fox Tech High School athletic complex as the site for the medical school and a 500-unit parking garage.

This is how the proposed 6,000- to 8,000-square-foot H-E-B outlet at South Flores Street and East César E. Chávez Boulevard could look.

With a $1 million incentive on the table, city staffers are looking to start negotiations with H-E-B for the development of a downtown grocery store near the company's headquarters.

The locally based grocery chain's store plans topped three other proposals in the city's vetting process.

Lori Houston, director of the Center City Development Office, said she expects to start hammering out the details with H-E-B in the coming weeks.

She notified H-E-B in a letter dated Aug. 30.

Depending on how the negotiations play out, Houston said she hopes to take the recommendation to City Council for approval in October or early November.

In H-E-B's submission to the city, obtained through an open records request, the grocer proposes a store between 6,000 and 8,000 square feet with a fueling station at East César E. Chávez Boulevard and South Flores Street.

Plans are for the store to carry basic items such as produce, meats, beer and wine, deli and frozen foods, and bread.

Central Market on Broadway would supply the store, near the King William Historic District, with prepared foods.

The store's location makes the company eligible to receive other incentives, such as city and SAWS fee waivers.

In early June, when H-E-B submitted its proposal, the company said building a downtown store was contingent on it receiving the $1 million incentive.

The grocer estimates construction would cost about $3.75 million, with the store opening about 12 months after council approval. Architecture firm Lake|Flato was tapped to design the location.
