hkskyline's 2017 in Takayama, Japan

Takayama is a good spot for an overnight stop from Nagoya to the Alpine Route further north. The historic merchant town has many well-preserved buildings and quaint shops to delight tourists.

The morning market by the river dates from over 200 years ago and is busy until noon.

North of the riverside market, the Yoshijima Heritage House was rebuilt in 1908. With little furnishings, visitors can admire the simple elegant style of the traditional merchant house.

The town's famous festival sees beautiful floats parade down the streets. When visiting at other times of the year, you can see some of these floats in a special exhibition hall.

Behind the museum, go up the stairs to visit the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine.

Many Japanese locales claim fame to their beef. Hida is no exception. The premium cuts are available in sushi form on the streets, but I opted for a more substantial portion in a restaurant instead.

A cheap way to try it out is a croquette on the street.

The traditional miso store showcases the complexity of this product. Good stuff.

Souvenirs, galore!

The historic market area has good historic architecture and lots of shops. I opted to overnight in the town rather than making a day trip out of nearby cities so to take advantage of quieter mornings.

Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect, but these are great. I love the historic market area and the temples.

At what time in the morning was the trash picked up from the streets? It looks funny just sitting on the side of the road like that.

We don't say this little town is clean, but it's definitely neat. Applicable for the whole Japan.

Jinya-mae Morning Market offers shopping opportunities for local produce.

Nearby, the building housing today's City Archives Museum was completed in 1895 with its interiors decorated with local cypress.

The Hirata residence was a shop for over 10 generations. Today, it is a museum showcasing its history, as well as many pieces of art.
