Hmm, I'd hardly consider the snowdon area a "ghetto" (in the improper sense of the word). I see it as a lively, bustling multi-cultural area. The highway notwithstanding, the neighbourhood is rather nice, it seems.

Yeah, I don't consider it a ghetto either. There are no ghettos whatsoever in Montreal. However I found that there were definitely a few shadier characters lurking around. Not really dangerous types though. Although I went through there at night when most businesses were closed, and the bustle was less apparent. It didn't help that my friend was hit with a snowball out of nowhere, a month after all the snow had melted.

There have been quite a few murders in the area in the last few years however. Including the Magnotta case.
off the top of my head: A double murder at the corner of decarie and snowdon, an old man beat to death for having child porn on decarie and a guy that lived in the same building as the perv killer robbed and killed a taxi driver. I have no links handy but I remember all these incidents well.

It doesn't look bad, but Erb street especially is inhabited by students, and can tend to look not-so-great on Saturday/Sunday mornings.

This section of Hazel had a bit of a rape/mugging problem not too long ago, though they claim it's gone now.
Indeed, Waterloo is creating some (soon to be nasty) student-ghetto towers that are making a significant part of the city very unattractive. Beyond that, apart from random "bad properties", much of K-W's less prosperous areas would be better described as lower middle class or working class (whether more or less suburban) than "ghetto" in any meaningful way. Kitchener has done an admirable job with its public housing by integrating fairly small developments into established neighbourhoods (I'll see if I can grab a few photos tomorrow).

True, but I'd hardly consider a few murders in a few years to be the hallmarks of a dangerous neighbourhood.

The scariest place to be at night, in my personal opinion is Berri-Uqam. Shit there does happen ever night. Beleive me, I've seen mch of it in the last few years.

As for the most dangerous place, try any busy street at 3:00 am and you have dozens of packs of stupid beasts roaming the streetscape looking for a fight, like those freaking Longueuil dogs.

A few images from google streetview on what I would consider more ghetto-style areas in St. John's (I think myself and signal have slightly different views on this one )

Run-down downtown neighborhoods are actually pretty typical the further you move away from the water. Here's a specific area of Cookstown Road I've been told turns raw after dark.

I had mentioned the New Penneywell area previously. The city actually does well in keeping up it's public housing developments, but this area is in serious neglect.

This cul-de-sac may be the saddest in town. It's completely neglected, falling apart, presumably unlivable. It's also situated in the heart of what most would consider the roughest neighborhood in town. These kinds of conditions never lead to anything positive.

There's not enough ghetto in Canada to sustain this thread so we'll have to adopt some American cities. Detroit's pretty much in Canada anyways. Here's some good youtube footage. What a waste. There's a lot of nice old building that have been abandoned.

Mundy Pond, right? The original St. John's ghetto.

Yup, St. Theresa's Court, right off Mundy Pond Road near the intersection of Ropewalk and Campbell. There's another cul-de-sac right next to this one which isn't much better. It looks like these buildings haven't been renovated since they were build (maybe around the 50's-60's)

Yeah, we had a family wedding at St. Theresa's and my parents took a cab because they didn't trust leaving the car in the lot while we were all in the church.

^thanks for sharing. Its cool footage, but the narration is utter shite. And I enjoyed the 'surrounded by abandoned 30 foot skyscrapers' remark

My girlfriend lives in the area (further away from the pond, but still close enough to be cautious). When I stay overnight she warns me to park directly under a streetlight, because the kids don't give a shit what they break in to they'll just do it for the thrill.

Surprisingly enough of all the times I've parked in these questionable neighborhoods after dark (including Livingstone) the only time my car has been broken in to was at 1 pm in a busy parking lot at MUN.

It really isn't that iffy. Maybe just a little iffy'er than a typical city of it's size, but it really isn't anything I'd be that worried about. Getting a window smashed in for 40 cents of change in the car is much better than getting stabbed for no real reason other than walking up the wrong street.

Though I do hear that P-Unit will beat the living shit out of you for a pack of gum

Yeah, it's a weird sort of iffy. It's almost like fighting within an extended family. It's very rarely violent.
