I haven't seen every city of this size, but I'm inclined to agree anyway. Stratford is very impressive, especially in person. The residential neighbourhoods blew me away and are seriously worthy of their own phototour.


For those that would like an excuse to visit Stratford, it is a major tourist destination. Stratford is home to the world renowned Stratford Shakespearean Festival, which features top notch actors and runs from April to November. There are four theatres showing plays by Shakespeare as well as non Shakespearean plays, musicals and concerts.

You made it to Stratford! Nice selection, though you left out the Festival Theatre and the old Ontario Normal School building beside it, both must-sees. I've blathered about the pros and cons of living in Stratford on this and that other forum, so no need to say anything further. It's definitely the Canadian champ for quaintness in the 30,000 to 50,000 population category, no question. (EDIT: Pardon my ignorance, Charlottetown and Stratford are probably neck and neck).

There has been talk of turning the wide expanse of parking behind city hall in this photo into an urban square or plaza. They even held a design competition a while ago. I hope they actually get around to it, though it's currently used as a bus terminal of sorts and the business owners along these streets are against it due to the inevitable loss of parking. By the way, the two floors above Citi Financial are Loreena McKennitt's (blech) offices.


A few more steps and you would have made it to my house. I live just down from this house in a two-block area littered with B&Bs.

Wow I never realized Stratford's downtown was so large!? It's so well-preserved.

If I had one good thing to say about Pizza Pizza, it's that they are pretty good at keeping it urban. Especially in small towns (Fergus excluded).

That's the Avon Theatre, the second largest of the four theatres in town. They put on mostly musicals and modern plays, i.e. non-Shakespearean entertainments.

It looks like that large area serving as a parking lot was a market square back in the day. Too bad I missed the Normal School and the Festival Theatre, I didn't have nearly as much time as I would have liked for this tour. I really wanted to explore the residential more, I'm sure I missed a lot of great houses too.

That is Stratford City Hall.

I miss the place. I moved away in 1988. Dum idea and I aim to move back asap.

My English professor from Michigan used to go to Stratford a lot, she would always brag about how beautiful it was, how sophisticated it was...
apparently she was correct. Beautiful city, I need to get up there now.

Thanks for all the photos you guys posted. I looked at them and imagined that I was there at that time. A lot of things have been changed. Stores changed owners in downtown area quite frequently in Stratford.
