Its called Chopped Steak House and is under the same umbrella as Moxie's. I was never a fan of Moxie's to be honest, and that location with Earl's/Keg/etc it was a matter of time. Not sure how well the Chopped Steak House will do as it will cater to a similar client and will have to attempt to take business from Earl's and Keg which might not be easy.

Gambling: OLG's new operatorin London and region promises $200-million improvement

Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd., a private operator based in British Columbia, says it will spend more than $200 million when it takes over the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG) gaming operations in Southwestern Ontario.

In a statement with the placeline of London, Gateway’s executive chairman Gabriel de Alba says his company plans an “investment of over $200 million to revitalize and enhance the gaming and entertainment landscape."

Gateway has purchased the rights to operate what’s called “the southwest gaming bundle.” It includes the casino in Point Edward and slots at Western Fair District in London, Woodstock Raceway, Clinton Raceway, Dresden Raceway and Hanover Raceway.

OLG has been working to modernize its operations and announced a year ago it was seeking bidders to lease facilities in London and at the raceways in Clinton, Dresden, Hanover and Woodstock. The owners of those properties will continue ownership.

There's a craps 'machine' at the slots now. I enjoy playing the game but its way less fun automated.

I once talked to a manager about it and he said that it will be a when, not if London will get real table games.

It's somewhat depressing there as the clientele is mostly elderly spending their monthly cheques. Expanding it to more of a real casino will help. There are a ton of people that go outside of this city to gamble in cities like Brantford, Point Edward, Windsor and Niagara Falls. Keeping them here means their losses will help go to the city they live in.

Absolutely agree, it is seen more as a night out for people when there are real tables and people to interact with not a bunch of regulars sitting then for hours pumping in money into machines.

If this group is spending anywhere near $200 million in London then I am wondering if they will be building something downtown. They are talking casino and entertainment component. Could we see a casino and hotel downtown?

It's $200 million for all of southern / southwest Ontario if I recall correctly.

I'd doubt it would be anything downtown, just at the Western Fair, or...

I've also heard rumors to build a hotel / casino near Wellington / 401 area. Would make it easier for out-of-towners to access and leave their money here.

Really?

New Vegan Drive-thru

http://www.lfpress.com/2017/05/23/co...don-next-month

I'm not so sure a drive-thru is going to reach vegan consumers. The vegans I know are a lot more environmentally-minded than the rest of the population, and tend to shun car culture.

You're talking about true vegans. This spot will likely appeal to optical vegans (aka trend followers, the ones who drink Starbucks and then wince) and people who would like to eat a little healthier (that Vegan Big Mac is still all kinds of fatty but they have other options).

Unhappy

I suspect it will sit empty for years. The Quiznos sub place is still vacant after 10 years. Building being owned by Farhi is kiss of death.

Unlikely he would ever sell the building to Western or Fanshawe or one of the up and coming gaming tech companies.

That would be only way to breath fresh life into it.

Not sure if anyone saw the news of the cafe that was struck by a drunk driver - I just opened that cafe a month ago, was thinking it would be a good spot for the SSP local meetup.

I did hear about that. So sorry! Assuming insurance covers everything, maybe it will help you get more exposure in the long run? Glad no one was hurt and hopefully you can get things running again quickly.

Noticed today the sign is up for a The Burgers Priest restaurant going in on Wellington Rd S near Wilkins. Believe this will be the first in London. Interesting choice of location as would I have thought they would be locating downtown along Richmond Row or up near Western/Masonville. FiveGuys closed pretty fast on WonderLand and Viscount so location choice is very important.

Had never heard of them before seeing the sign a couple weeks ago when I was driving by. Just checked their site, I think I'll give them a go when they open. Five Guys might not have lasted over in Westmount, but the one near White Oaks is doing well, and so is South St, so I think this is probably a better location. Plus Wonderland was one you had to plan to turn in to since it was only accessible through the mall parking lot. I think this corner at Wilkins has better possibilities. Plus lots of hotels nearby, which I think will help.

Yeah, and from what I heard Obsidian Group is buying it, the owners of Crabbys, Chuck's Roadhouse & Coffee Culture. Knowing there's already a Crabbys downtown, I can guarantee it will probably open up as a Chucks Roadhouse.
