Did you not read the article? It provides the context necessary to understand the couple's plight. If, after having read the article, you still don't understand the couple's plight, here's some help from Charles Dickens:

Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness.
Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound ought and six, result misery.

Charles Dickens, David Copperfield, 1849

i hope some of you never end up on a fixed income

if you read the article they signed the rental agreements and were never told of this payment needed, they already pay BC hydro and this is above and beyond that, it should have been disclosed to them prior to signing

Sorry, we're tying it to your Salary. About 80% of your take-home. What's the average household income in Vancouver? 60k or something?

So, after tax, that'll be, what... $3800/month* or something?

*Utilities extra

Thanks for posting.
The block fronting Main St. looks smaller in the promotional renders than the City documents.

SEFC photo update | December 23rd, 2011

I am back from Toronto for the holidays and I had a chance on the 23rd to take an hour or so walk through SEFC and take a few pictures. True to form, Vancouver provided an overcast and rainy day, despite the fact the previous two had been beautiful. It was good to be back and see how things had progressed during the fall. Maynards Block is a bit of a disappointment in its flat colouring. Hopefully it will come alive with light and motion once it is occupied. James is looking good. I especially like the townhouses. Wall Centre False Creek and the new Pinnacle Living False Creek project are both progressing nicely but are not far enough along to pass judgment on how they will add to the neighbourhood. Well, here are the photos.

SEFC from the Cambie Street Bridge, looking down 1st Avenue.

Close up of the Cambie Street Bridge-facing lower units of Maynards Block. The recently added extra-wide sidewalk on the east side of Cambie Street from 8th Avenue north will continue down beside Maynards Block and eventually lead all the way to the Seawall. I'm happy to see a distinctly commercial expression for the storefronts that will face onto this widened sidewalk for half of the length of the building.

A couple shots of the courtyard area and the 1st Avenue building of Maynards Block.

The exposed aggregate (pebbled) archways of the entrances to the James townhouses in the podium have been carried around for the entrances of the townhouse in the base of the tower.

Wall Centre False Creek is growing and has become difficult to photograph since the last time I was here in mid-August.

The Pinnacle Living False Creek project on 2nd Avenue near Wall Centre False Creek is coming along.

The 1st and Main "14 Sites" supportive housing building is nearly complete and looking good.

Thanks for the shots, SFU.

I love the shape of Maynard's, but the colour is just....blech! It doesn't match the sleekness of the overall design.

Thanks for the shots!

Never noticed the commercial space at Maynards - that should help draw some people under the bridge.

The aggragate entrances at James look good - altough the quality of the workmanship may be a bit off judging by the pics (the edges and seams look a bit rough)
