I miss Randy's. Too bad they had the worst hours of all time.

Canada's first Wendy's restaurant gets makeover
(Hamilton Mountain News, Gord Bowes, July 10 2016)

Canada’s first Wendy’s restaurant has a new look, but the same friendly faces.

The outlet at 869 Upper James St. was recently renovated from the ground up.

Literally.

The parking lot was dug up and subgrade material was replaced to bring it up to code. The concrete sidewalks were also replaced.

The building itself was gutted — anyone passing by could be forgiven for thinking there had been a fire — and the interior replaced during the renovations which brought the restaurant into line with Wendy’s new look.

“The old brick was very dark and that’s about all that was really showing — old brick and empty windows,” said Peter Hogarth, who co-owns the location with John Ribson.

The Upper James restaurant was the first in Canada, opening in 1975 next to the first Pioneer gas station, opened by Hogarth’s father, Murray, in 1956.

A couple new spots opening in Hess.

Dip is an ice cream spot that's sort of attached to the patio at Ten Decades. It's a bit of a weird setup.

Big Tobacco Kitchen is opening at 109 George where The Tavern used to be.

I'm wondering if BTK is the newest iteration of the space from the same guy who owned Tavern. I was told by people who worked at Tavern that the owner was very difficult to work with, and was an absentee (lived in Alberta?).

I don't know. But I do know that BTK wants to open extremely quickly (they originally said 4 weeks, that was early July), but they haven't applied for a liquor license yet, which seems bizarre. Maybe The Tavern's liquor license is transferable or something?

The AGCO calls it a change of ownership but means the same as a license transfer. That's likely why there's no posted notice of an application for one.

Anyone checked out the Heather yet on Barton Street East near the general? Looked in at walking by on Sunday, seems pretty fancy.

Also the space beside the Greek Palace on John N has a $70K building permit for a restaurant. That space has been vacant for ages. Now only if the Golden Fortune guy would sell.

The Heather just opened this week. I want to go, but we don't have a babysitter yet and it's extremely expensive. Close to $80/person not including tax/tip. I hope it works out for him, but I really wish he had stuck with his original plan of a more upscale casual all day cafe thing. Barton Village isn't ready for $200+ meals yet as much as I wish it was. I'd open a cafe myself but I don't even drink coffee, haha.

I'm excited if it's legit. Hamilton has an abundance of hipster dives a la rapscallion and nice looking but mediocre bistros a la Aberdeen tavern, but very few intimate, high end places.
