Edmonton Indy contract signing expected by week's end

http://www.edmontonsun.com/news/edmo.../16362346.html

Quote:
A new Edmonton Indy deal is expected to be inked by week's end, says an Octane official.

“We're into the final details now,” Octane spokesman Norman Prieur said Monday.

“(The contract will be signed) probably by the end of the week.”

He declined to elaborate, except to say the Indy will remain a three-year event, which will run from 2011 through 2013.

This, this, and this. If we're gonna keep doing it, we've gotta do it right, especially if we want it to be a) profitable, b) popular, c) perpetual. The Grey Cup festivities from this last weekend were a perfect example of exactly the kind of party we should have every year for Indy, with the kind of buy in and support from local businesses and residents.

^why? tons of events centered around one main venue to create critical mass. Indy events did not have this with many all around the city (which is fine), but we need to have a good selection in one spot to spawn a festival atmosphere.

^ Maybe that's the better way to go. More visible and densely packed ancillary events instead of a bunch spread out geographically and chronologically.

Good to hear about the race staying, that would have been a huge loss for Edmonton.

I would like to see better promotion from the city and businesses. Hopefully now that both have realized how close we came to losing it that will happen.

But Octane knows this... look at crescent street or its adjacent roads.

The question will be... do Edmontonians want to celebrate summer, cars, people, beer, or say 'Indy, ew'.

^ I think most of those that are against the Indy feel that way more for the fact that it has not generated a reasonable economic spinoff, than for what it is. Make a short but big, flashy, and highly visible party around it and maybe we'll get that economic spinoff we're looking for, and/or give people a reason to enjoy downtown/the city without having to attend the event itself. Case in point, someone said that an estimated 100,000 people came to the city for the Grey Cup, but Commonwealth only seats about 60,000. Think about that for a second.

Indy 2010 lost less than expected
City still in the hole for $475,000 for earlier expenses

Gordon Kent
Edmonton Journal

Friday, January 28, 2011

The Indy race created less red ink than expected last year, but the city is on the hook for $475,000 to cover earlier expenses and other charges, a new report says.

The 2010 race lost $2.8 million, down from the $3.4-million deficit predicted in the event's budget, according to financial results released Thursday...

Promoters ready to fire up Indy marketing campaign

Dan Barnes
Edmonton Journal

Friday, February 04, 2011

Edmonton's new Indy promoters have 171 days to sell their product to a market that believed the open wheel auto race had died and wasn't officially notified of its miraculous reincarnation until well after the Christmas ticket-buying season...
