Also, downtown Homewood's Jack's has been demolished and will be replaced with the restaurant's new fast casual form.

Will this be a part of the Curio by Hilton project in Downtown Homewood? That would be a nice addition.

Haha, I doubt that they are related, but I'm sure the hotel project is on its way to existence.

Daniel Corp. begins construction on Parkside development

This is the one across from Regions Field. You'll see it in the outfield if you're sitting on the 3rd base side (facing south).

Nice to see some retail on the ground... hopefully that doesn't sit empty.

The article says 5 stories, but the rendering shows at least 6... maybe even 7.

Ascend is now working on the 3rd floor! Many more to come, of course!

Downtown Photo

I flew back home to Birmingham on a recent trip; my plane took a nice interesting route through downtown, and this is one of my favorite photos from the sequence that I was able to capture:

Geez... thinking back to, like, 2007 or 2008... are you still just lurking around?

apparently we'll see final renderings next week, but these were part of the article on al.com about the approved landscaping and materials:

Ascend has reached roughly the height of Quinlan Castle. This is only an observation while I was driving down the Expressway, so I don't know what floor they're on.

FINALLY! Protective Stadium's design renderings have been released! IMO, it looks lovely. It's like a stadium in a park with plenty of room to permenantly expand the stadium if it is ever warranted.

The business that the stadium will bring, along with the extensive landscaping, will definitely drive up demand for service and hospitality related business in the area. Maybe it will hasten the redaptive-reuse of the former Carraway Hospital.

Looks good, I feel like Populous has a lot of wisdom and experience to make this smaller, relatively cheap stadium clever in its design and very useful since the focus won't be on some fancy roof or record setting video board. I look forward to seeing more about the BJCC reno.

I think that Populous really put this stadium in an excellent position to fill it to capacity. In addition, if you really look at the bowls of the stadium, it's easy to see how the stadium can easily be expanded, with little to no disruption.

IMO, if the stadium were to need to expand (I don't anticipate that need in the near term) the eastern upper deck could be extended counterclockwise, likely adding about ~5,000 seats. This expansion, an absolute speculation on my part, would likely be done in a way so that the upper western bowl could be extended clockwise, probably adding ~1,000 seats.

A further, third, expansion, would likely (IMO) involved extending the eastern upper deck further counter-clockwise to meet the northern side of the press box/suite structure. In my estimate, that could maybe add another ~2,000.

I'm quite happy with this design. Looking at it, it just seems like there is ample space to expand (if needed). As it is, I think this is going to be a beautiful stadium in a park that will be perfect for the city's needs, while not slapping down a concrete prairie that you might see in larger cities.

Welp, looks like Ascend is about to push itself up to be the tall boy at the Five Points South intersection. It's already taller than Quinlan Castle and should rise up past Hotel Indigo within a week.

Really looking forward to see how this one stands out.

There are workers gutting the first floor of Brown-Marx... dunno what is going on. Construction fencing surrounds the building. We know that the current owner is trying to limit the negative presence that the vacant building imposes on the Heaviest Corner, but I'm wondering what the owner of Brown-Marx is doing...

They had mentioned a hotel by the same people that did the Elyton. That would be a pretty big hotel.
