more competition for direct flights to Regina and Saskatoon would be awesome

nothing is more stupid than flying to Calgary then to Regina/Saskatoon from Winnipeg.

There is a Saskatoon and Regina Air Service link. Anyway, where did you hear this if you don't mind me asking?

YWG just posted y/e numbers, and it looks like the pax surge at the end took them marginally higher than last year.

http://www.waa.ca/uploads/ck/files/W...Statistics.pdf

Roughly 20,000 more pax on the year. Considering most of the year was down from 2010, this was quite an accomplishment towards the end of the year. Hopefully T-New will allow YWG to attract some more flights in the near future.

Halifax Stanfield always seems to beat Richardson in passenger volume by the slimmest of margins. It will be a tight race again this year.

The margin is widening. Halifax Stanfield had over 200,000 more passengers than Winnipeg Richardson in 2011.

Yeah. Winnipeg is less of a Hub than Halifax when it comes to air travel, and it will probably always be that way.

It's like a bus stop for all the people heading to and from work in Alberta.

Hahaha, well said. It's also often the last refuel/transfer point for trips going overseas...

GE opens $50 million aircraft engine testing centre in Winnipeg
By: The Canadian Press

Quote:
WINNIPEG - Industrial giant General Electric (NYSE:GE) has opened a new $50 million aircraft engine testing, research and development centre in Winnipeg that could eventually create up to 50 jobs.

The U.S. company said Wednesday the centre will be run by joint venture partner StandardAero and will perform icing certification testing and develop other tests and equipment for GE Aviation's aircraft engines.

The new centre will employ 10 people initially and could expand to 50 jobs.

"This is a terrific example of how research and partnerships are driving new, innovative technology that can be applied within the aviation industry to drive productivity in Canada and also internationally," said Elyse Allan, president and CEO of GE Canada.

Good news though!
It is located out in the middle of the airport, west of the runways.

Ah, thanks. I didn't know this development was happening, so a nice surprise for me to see that.

GE Heads North For New Jet Engine Ice Test Facility

Jet engines on airliners can swallow a fair amount of ice during a flight, and to make sure they’re up to the task, engine makers bombard them with all kinds of frozen water. This week General Electric pulled the cover off its newest engine testing facility in the appropriately cold location of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The testing ground is designed to take advantage of the cold Canadian winters for ice certification of new jet engines.
Because a jet engine can encounter icing conditions as it flies through clouds, the Federal Aviation Administration requires several tests to ensure engines can operate in freezing conditions. Tests include blasting engines with tiny ice particles similar to those found in clouds, as well as coating engine parts in ice. That’s done to check the associated risk of those parts being iced over and the risk of ice breaking loose and going deeper into the engine.
General Electric says Winnipeg’s 50-plus days of sub-zero temperatures annually makes the new location ideal for cold weather testing. The company runs another test facility in Peebles, Ohio, but the weather there isn’t reliabily cold enough.
