How to demolish a skyscraper... Japan style...

Maybe this is interesting enough to award being moved to ARCHITECTURE forum... I dunno. In doubt, I posted here.

How to implode a building without large areas around? To implode a building in the middle of a crowded and dense metropolis like Tokyo is never easy.

So the clever japanese from KAJIMA CORPORATION had an idea, based on a doll toy called DARUMA-OTOSHI, they created a way to demolish a building from the bottom to the top.

Hidraulic columns support the floors above. They demolish the bottom floor, and then they low the ENTIRE building and repeat the process.

The method results in 20% less time than conventional demolition (without explosives), less noise, less dirt and its more easy to separate materials for recycling.

Yeah, how are they getting the beams to lower like that and then how do they demolish the structural elements and get the beams connected back to the next floor?

Great find - one of those things that seems so obvious once you've seen it .

the hydraulic lifts are below the ground, so it looks like as they remove the structure, one of the hydraulic beams replaces a column right away.

Quite an amazing process to watch, actually (in fast-forward, of course). Very innovative and ingenious technique.
