Yeah, it's one thing to see model simulations, but to see a 2000 foot tower doing that is crazy.

I'm sure it was, but standing right underneath the thing with a video camera would be the last place I'd feel comfortable. (Remembering the Taipei 101 crane accident)

Wow! That video is simply amazing.

I thought earthquakes were over in seconds...this one seemed to last FOREVER.

nope they typically last 3- 4 minutes, followed by several large aftershocks spanning the next week which also last 3- 4 minutes.

Yeah, accidents are scary and always a risk in construction, but the Taipei 101 crane was loaded beyond design capacity, didn't account for the wind that day, and the building site already had numerous citations. That's an accident that was preventable.

I don't know if this video has been posted before, but here it is. It has some nice time-lapses of its construction.

Can someone post a picture of the office tower they are building next to it? I know it is part of this development, but for some reason there hasn't been much talk about it.

Man, that platform on top of the antenna is huge- you could easily have an outdoor observation deck up there. Maintenance people will surely be able to hang out up there... at 2080 feet its bigger than anything on the Burj at that elevation.

I don't see why they can't have an outdoor observation deck at least on top of the superstructure at the antenna base (1630 ft) -tons of square footage at that level.

I wouldn't really want to be *in* that building, but no major structural damage reported so far in Tokyo

Here is video of TST swaying during the earthquake, it swayed quite a bit but it is designed to withstand larger than was felt in Tokyo.

Skip ahead to 3 minutes for the action

I can't imagine being the crane operator. There would be nowhere to go. I wonder if the crane operators were remembering Taipei 101 during the quake.

Tokyo Sky Tree makes me think of Trantor (the fictional planet, not the user who posts here under that name).

Overall i like it, however i think the top is a missed opportunity to complete the tower. The top above the observation decks looks tacked on and ends so abruptly. It doesn't look complete and the design doesn't flow. I think if you completed the mesh like framework up to a point or pinnacle it would look more complete. It sure is big though....

omg that video -- the quake hits then the crane wires are whipping around, then afterward the top part of the tower and the top crane are waving back and forth -- and for such a lonnnng time -- terrifying!

also, great work by the video guy. i dont know how he held together and did it -- wow.

I swear this thing makes me wish I was Japanese. Or that Japan was American. Whichever would let me live in cities like that (minus the earthquakes, tsunamis, and painful etiquette).
