Yea, Ottawa doesn't have any overhead LED signs yet... we do have those temporary trailer-based construction LED signs that have been "permanently" mounted at the sides of the highway. Maybe they'll just add more of those...

An interchange could be placed there, even a proper A4 since the maintenance yard in the northwest and the park-and-ride is city-owned, but with doubts as to the ability to extend the freeway anywhere past that point, why bother?
Here are the official plans for this area, construction will begin in 2012
- Trim will be 4-lanes from174 all the way up the hill, will eventually connect to Frank Kenny in phase 2 (2016). Expect New Trim to be approx 30m to the east of its currently location as it goes up the Hill.
- Park & Ride will be expanded by approx 380 spots, and access will be opened to Old Montreal Rd through extension of Dairy Rd (no more left turn issues coming out of the Park&Ride at night)
- Old Montreal/St-Joseph will be 4 lanes from Cardinal Creek (east of Trim) to 10th Line
- RR174 4-lane section will be extended approx 500m further east (after the corner)
- No interchange planned for Trim Rd, will be part of the EA for the widening of 174 beyond Trim (due in 2014). Don't expect anything concrete for construction for at least another 10 years.
- New Intersection on 174 east of Trim, to serve new OMB approved Tamarack Development on VandenHam farm (ie. where Laporte Garden is located). Probably 2015-ish

On the 2012 budget, while not mention in the media (not a surprise so they want to give the impression to motorists they are left out which is not the case), there are some road expansion/widening planned for this year. Although at least they slowed down the pace for this year. $30 million for suburplosion projects.

$6.5 million for St-Joseph from Tenth Line and Trim
$24.3 million for Trim between North Service and Innes (currently underway south of Innes to Millenium Blvd)

Edit: The mayor's speech also mentionned widening of Eagleson and Stonehaven in the Bridlewood area.

They also mentionned about the 174 as well, but not indicating which part. They mention safety issues so I would presume it has to do with the section east of Trim Road.

In the south the mayor cited Cambrian Road in Half Moon Bayas well as River Road in Riverside South and Albion Road in Findlay Creek (are they talking about widening projects here?)

Inquiry by Councillor Thompson regarding congestion on Bank Street due a traffic light at Findlay Creek. Issue will be discussed at next week's Transportation Committee

North of the Queensway: narrow to 2 lanes, ban trucks, limited parking bays on alternating sides, reduce speed to 40 km/h

South of the Queensway: pretty hard to do much without gridlock or some expropriation

City engineers have concluded Bronson -NORTH OF THE QUEENSWAY, can't be narrowed because it's too busy when in fact the purpose of a road diet is to reduce traffic. It's like engineers can't see past the ends of their noses.

Thursday evening (Dec. 1, after 22:00), the west-bound traffic was again using the north Heron Road Bridge. It looks like it was re-opened ahead of the Dec. 3 estimate.

It seems as if there is a Jersey barrier along the south side of the north bridge, but the railing on the north side looks to be a mass of steel beams pretending to be an open railing. It is a shame that the beautiful views need to be blocked out in the name of safety. I don't recall any accidents along that bridge when the old (more 'transparent') railings were there. I have the same issue with the Hunt Club (Sheflin) Bridge with its walls.

Next year, the south bridge will under go the same treatment.

It seems that they are building the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge on the east bank of the Rideau River and then they will move it into position.

There are a few pictures from Dec. 1, 2011:

View from the Armstrong/River Road intersection of the west-bound half of the bridge

Detail of the construction of the ribs under the west-bound running way (one 'box' per lane)

The curve for the 'out-rigger' sidewalk is taking shape

A view from the west (Judging from the towers, there are about 8 ribs still to be added and another short tower.)

The temporary structures to support the bridge when it is slid across the river

The towers above the deck ribs will be used to position and hold the arches while the cables are strung. The towers give you a sense of how high the arches will be. They have constructed 'rails' under the bridge (visible in the 'sidewalk curve' picture above) so that it can be moved, but the towers are built up from the ground. The towers will need to be removed before the bridge can be moved. From the looks of it, during the move the ends of the arches will be on wheels on the rails and the bridge deck will be suspended by the cables from the arches. Since the land upon which the bridge is being built is higher than the mounding pads for the arches, I assume that the temporary support structures will have some form of hydraulic lift to lower the bridge into place once it has neen slid out over the river. I hope they provide advanced notice of when the move will take place. It would be interesting to watch; kind of like the Rapid Bridge Replacement of the 417 bridges.

Should have put it under the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge thread, though. Perhaps one of the Moderators can move it for me. Sorry about that.

Related to the above couple of posts. Not sure if I've mentionned that before but looking at the City of Ottawa cams, I think the Earl Armstrong widen project is virtually completed.

Drove down it today and yes, it is complete, as is the Limebank widening. With the bridge opening this coming year, and all the road infrastructure in place, expect an explosion (suburbplosion?) of home building next year.

All the more reasons to hurry up on that Barrhaven-Leitrim link plus the O-Train extension to Leitrim. The ideal for me would be the first shovel been given next spring. The likelyhood would be another year or two later at least.
