The infamous Battery Hotel and Suites (recently purchased by Memorial for use as a graduate residence) is going charcoal. Yay!

October 25, 2015

It was almost as bad as The Rooms. We sure do love to put our most hideous buildings on pedestals.

Eaton Center (North Tower - 1 Dundas)

Didn't expect to see a reclad on this bad boy.

Looks like they are testing different glass.

I hope they keep that Eaton Centre tower looking as close to the original as possible.

Is there a render of what Britt will look like when it's done?

Curious if the south side of the tower will be restructured or if the vision glass is artistic impression. I'm leaning towards the latter but, south views do have value.

That's awful. The old Sutton Place was one of the best (only) mid-century modern commercials skyscrapers in Toronto. It looked straight out of midtown Manhattan circa 1965. The "Britt" rendering looks like an instantly dated mishmash.

The Edmonton Professional/Intact building is a pretty bad transition too.

Wow. That is a drastic transition. That can't be cheap to do. Looks like a big special assessment.

While I don't think you'll get much argument about the reclad, you'll find few who find it to be one of the best mid-century modern commercials skyscrapers in Toronto. Also it wasn't the only mid century skyscraper to go up, hell it wasn't even built until 1967. If we want to look at lets say 1945 to 1967 just to be fair to the Sutton, there were several better mid century modern towers that went up. Even if we just did 1967 I think TD Tower is the hands down winner there.

Yep. Brings me to tears to take a quality 60s era tower and turn it into a frankenstein. It's onlt the only one either. Should see the plans currently underway for the Simpson Tower
