Where you see bland, I see refined. Also, one has to take into account that this reclad was meant to bring that old 70's horror cube to mesh elegantly with the newer towers of Concordia. It's a total success.

Here's a render of what it will look like when finish:

Still very little progress at TD Place.

The adjacent Fortis Building (not to be confused with Fortis Place, one of our major U/C projects) will also be reclad. It was the very first office building in downtown St. John's so it's about time it got a facelift.

A reminder of what the two buildings will look like:

Fortis Building - Retrofit.

Retrofitting work is expected to start sometime after 2012. Fortis had proposed a 15-storey tower to be built adjacent, but it was abandoned after considerable public
opposition. This 12-storey building opened in 1969 as the Royal Trust Building, and was the first office tower in St. John's.

A property developer in Quebec transformed an old office building into a luxury condo development. Not sure how I feel about the end result but it is very well situated... interesting

I like the end result of the QC one! Very nice.

When is the Fortis reclad in St. John's going to start? It is sorely needed.

There is no scheduled date as of now, at least not publicly. All we know is they say it will begin after the completion of Fortis Place, which is scheduled to be completed this fall or next spring. They also said "sometime after 2012", but at this point, that's kind of obvious

So I imagine it will start somewhere between this fall (2013), or next fall (2014). (but depending on how long it takes them to begin after Fortis Place is completed, I would put the latest start date at spring 2015.)

So we still have some waiting to do yet..

Townie is correct.

Also, we have an acute labour shortage in Newfoundland for this type of work. The media has run stories this week about bringing in workers from St-Pierre and La Francophonie as well as Ireland.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Fortis simply doesn't have the people to finish TD Place (it owns that building as well) and start the Fortis Building reclad until the construction of Fortis Place is finished.

(Who knew you could write such a sentence that isn't about Irving?).

*****

Huge improvement, David! I like the finished product as well. It looks... not like a reclad at all.

Wow! I remember that building from when I was studying at Laval. The new cladding is very unique, but it's too bad they turned it into a pretty plain box...the old massing was kind of monumental, really set it apart from other bland suburban lowrises.

Recladding the top 1/3 of One Wall Centre to make the dark glass of the bottom 2/3 uniform throughout the tower!

As there will be lots of more photos from this building in the future, I will create it its very own thread.

Currently the building is undergoing a major renovation work where the windows of the top 18 floors (floors 30-48) will be replaced with new ones. The new windows will be of the same reflective glass as the first 30 floors and 12 years after the completion will finally make the building look like it originally designed.

For the past two months workmen have been working on the roof, building a huge platform surrounding the whole building. This platform is now operational and it will provide the workmen a platform to stand on while replacing window elements. Once a floor is completed, the platform will be lowered one floor below and the work will resume. Replacing all windows on one floor is expected to take one week, at least once the workmen catch their new routine. The work started officially end of last week, but nothing is visible yet.

Below are some photos from today. More to follow in the weeks to come.
