Genting to Spend $4 Billion Finishing Off Las Vegas Resort

Genting, controlled by Malaysian billionaire Lim Kok Thay, paid $350 million for the 87-acre (35-hectare) site, once home to the Stardust. The Echelon project will be re-branded Resorts World Las Vegas, with the opening of phase one planned for 2015, the company said at the time.

“We’re at the moment at the planning stage,” Lim told reporters at Malaysia’s Genting Highlands resort, where he operates the country’s only casino. “The group is undergoing regulatory investigations by the Nevada Gaming Board, which is one of the strictest you can get. I’m quite confident we’ll obtain this license and only with that we’ll commence the construction.”

Genting has been pushing into U.S. gambling amid restrictions on opening more casinos on home soil, where Muslims are forbidden from gambling under Malaysia’s Shariah laws. It runs the Resorts World Casino at New York City’s Aqueduct race track, the top-grossing U.S. slot machine parlor, and is pursuing one in Miami. Lim also opened a 750-acre beach front resort on the Bimini islands in the Bahamas in July as part of the group’s expansion in the Americas.

The uncompleted Las Vegas resort became a symbol of U.S. real estate excesses and city’s woes after Boyd stopped construction in August 2008.

Resorts World To Commence Construction Within A Year

Resorts World has gone on record. Construction on its Las Vegas destination will commence within one year, or by June 19, 2014, specifically.

Property representatives went before local government officials yesterday regarding several points and, unsurprisingly, received approval for all of its requests. A thumbs up was given to its intention to add trees and various other landscaping along its Las Vegas Boulevard border; to drop plans to 'wrap' the long dormant Echelon husk it will replace away from view; and to build a 35-foot-tall wall that will announce the new mega-resort to come. And, not just any wall. This one will have a sound component (mandated to be no louder than 60 decibels, or the volume of a normal conversation) that will play music as well as help direct passersby to one of two preview centers that were also green-lighted.

Resorts World Las Vegas is making progress, the Las Vegas-Review Journal reported. Construction is expected to start this year. The project could cost anywhere from $2 billion to $7 billion.

The site is Boyd Gaming’s unfinished Echelon development, which Genting bought for $350 million. The plan is to use at least part of the existing structure for the new casino-resort.

“It’s been a busy year, and we’re trying to be thoughtful about the development,” the firm told the Review-Journal.

Genting doesn’t yet have a Nevada casino license, but the state is currently looking at the company and regulators expect a hearing in the near future. The investigation process takes some time and Genting is a huge company.

The firm also wants to build a massive casino in Miami, but the state of Florida hasn’t approved such casinos, at least not yet. Las Vegas is the focus of the company’s U.S. operations for the time being. It also has a gambling facility in New York City, but that is nowhere near the scale of what it intends for Las Vegas.

Now we just need the full completion and opening of the Fontainebleau Resort. Shame that the economy stalled construction. It was topped out but never finished inside.

I kind of thought Vegas had matured out of its tacky phase with the likes of the Cosmo and City Center, but apparently, China hasn't gotten the memo. Even the Wynn gold-colored glass on this particular massing seems architecturally tone deaf.

Wow, that's a horrible design. A deadly combination of casino + Asian developing world design.

I guess it's Vegas gambling schlock-o-tecture, and there's nothing you can do about it. It's like the towers of some random Chinese inland city traveled across the Pacific and attached themselves to a casino.

I have to agree that even by Vegas standards this complex is atrocious. City Center at least boasts some beautiful architecture.

Yes it is, but I think the layout has better feng shui than the original Echelon design.

The Great Wall element is extremely silly, ruining any aesthetic integrity, and should be eliminated.

The Asian style buildings in the front can work if they do it tastefully and use quality materials.

The glass on the towers is more of a bronze or copper color than gold.

Looks like they are going to use the existing foundations started on the stalled project, and then add even more towers to the west.

I think the recession has created the impression among developers that the sophisticated style of architecture has bombed in Vegas because, face it, you don't have to go to Vegas to see that style of architecture, you can see it in most big cities. You go to Vegas to see over-the-top, outlandish, foolish crap. So now they are taking a step backward to the previous "folly" style that accompanied Vegas's biggest boom that continued unabated from 1989 to 2008.

I kinda like it, its Awful and its Great at the same time... its Vegas. I would not wish this on any other city, but this is what will sell to prime Asian gamblers, I say go for it. Hope the Chinese village in front is well executed with good materials. Only part that should go is the Great Wall

To be honest, this proposal doesnt look that bad. Its different enough from the other themed resorts to stand on its own and i like the village at the base. If the real thing matches the renderings, i think it will be a good addition to the city. Certainly better than the partially finished bare steel and concrete skeleton that sits on that lot right now.
