Good luck replacing all the planners, designers, lawyers, engineers, social service workers etc that work for the indoor union. Pretty much everyone on my floor in Metro Hall has at least a masters degree. And works for approximately the same salary one can get in the private sector. Probably less at the top end, but with better benefits. We're not all uneducated garbage men. For what it's worth I'm a contract worker for planning and don't get ANY sick days. The sooner the strike ends the better.
The reason the city is cleaner is that most BIAs and groups of businesses have started using private pick up. Plus the managers at the city have done an amazing job cleaning up the garbage. My former supervisor at Economic Development has been redeployed to parks and is cleaning up garbage. These workers have recently also got a court injunction allowing for garbage pick up in new areas, which is another reason for the increased cleanliness over the last week. Some of the crazier union members would call these scabs, but I think it's great that they are keeping our city clean.
