Pampanga giant lantern shines in Singapore
By Jovi T. De Leon
Saturday, December 1, 2012

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- For the first time in the history of the Parul Sampernandu, a 16-foot giant lantern from this city, is shining permanently in Singapore.

The giant lantern, crafted with plastic and powered by 800 bulbs, was shipped to Singapore in component parts and is on display at the Cathedral of Good Shepherd. It costs the City Government some P150,000 to put the giant lantern for the “Paskong Pinoy 2012: Giant Parol in Singapore.”

Complemented by 42 smaller fiberglass lanterns, it is the first time a giant lantern is on international display, after the Fernandino lanterns made waves and are still colorfully shining in Beijing, China; Bangkok, Thailand; New York and Maryland in the United States; Russia, Hawaii, Poland, Italy; and 12 other countries, according to Mayor Oscar Rodriguez.

Aviation center opens in Clark
By Rey G. Navales
Monday, December 3, 2012

CLARK FREEPORT -- Cebu Pacific Air and CAE, world leader in aviation training, inaugurated Monday their new aviation training center inside this Freeport.

The joint venture, known as the Philippine Academy for Aviation Training Inc. (PAAT), will initially cater to Airbus A319/320/321 series pilot type-rating training requirements and will provide “wet” instructor-led type-rating training to CEB’s current and new-hire pilots, and to other aircraft operators of the region.

PAAT will definitely put the Philippines on the map when it comes to world-class, state-of-the-art aviation training,” said Cebu Pacific Air president and CEO Lance Gokongwei.

“This is the first CAE aviation training center in the Philippines, and we are very proud of this joint venture. It will be essential in meeting the training requirements not only of our growing number of aviation professionals at Cebu Pacific Air, but also of other aircraft operators in the region,” said Gokongwei.

CEB will take delivery of a total of 50 Airbus A320, A321neo and A330 aircraft until 2021. It is scheduled to launch its long-haul flights in the third quarter of 2013.

“CAE is very pleased to partner with Cebu Pacific Air to offer the highest-quality aviation training in the Philippines,” said Jeff Roberts, CAE’s Group President of Civil Simulation Products, Training and Services.

“Our global network of training locations provides airlines and other aircraft operators a complete training solution for their personnel. The PAAT is equipped with the latest simulation and training technology, and the training is delivered by well-qualified, experienced instructors. We are confident that this new facility will enhance aviation safety and operational efficiency in the region,” he added.

Festival dances highlight Pampanga Day opening
By Herbert P. Mapiles and Ian Ocampo Flora
Friday, December 7, 2012

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Pampanga Provincial Government launched on Thursday its opening of the 441st Aldo Ning Kapampangan by bringing together the various festival dances in the province in one celebration of local history.

Dubbed as “Pamamupul” (Harvest) Festival, the event featured dances from Pampanga’s rich traditional ritual celebrations of Sasmuan’s Kuraldal to the local government-invented dance celebrations of recent times.

Governor Lilia Pineda said the event aimed at providing people with the opportunity to see festival dances in one celebration as part of the overall celebration of the province’s founding anniversary.

Provincial Tourism officer Arwin Lingat said the celebration was a “harvest” of the rich festival celebrations of the province, which are only staged once a year.

“People will now have a unique opportunity to see these dance celebrations in one event and they would no longer have to wait for almost a year just to see them,” Lingat said.

Lingat said this is first time the Provincial Government has brought together all festival traditions in the province under one celebration.

Various towns trooped to the Pampanga Provincial Capitol staging their signature festival dances...

Coping with an emerging megacity
By Charles E. Buban
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Saturday, December 8th, 2012

THE UNITED Nations Human Settlements Program (UN–Habitat) defines a “mega city” as a city with 20 million or more inhabitants.

While Metro Manila is not yet considered one (compared to Shanghai, Tokyo, Mumbai, London or New York), its growing population—currently pegged at around 12 million—may soon find itself merging with another densely populated region of Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) that also now has around 12 million inhabitants.

“With excellent roads and much-improved telecommunications system already connecting these two regions, the fact that there are several thriving business centers and economic zones system existing and new infrastructures being completed all over these two places, it would no longer be surprising to realize a mega city emerging out of Metro Manila and Calabarzon,” said PA Alvarez Properties and Development Corp. president Jonathan Lu.

Those in Bulacan, Pampanga or Tarlac have the North Luzon Expressway and the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway to make sure they are just few hours’ drive from their destinations in Metro Manila or even Calabarzon.”

Lu also shared that PAAPDC is already set to launch its first project in Bulacan next year. He said: “This will be our second project outside the province of Laguna after Bridgepointe Place, a 34-hectare development in San Fernando City, Pampanga. We also see an opportunity in Tarlac as this province is an emerging growth area with all the infrastructure developments being undertaken in the Clark-Subic area.”

Parul Sampernandu highlights 1st Christmas fest in Hawaii
By Jovi T. De Leon
Sunday, December 9, 2012

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - A 20-foot giant Parul Sampernandu is currently the highlight of the first-ever Christmas Festival at the newly dedicated “Alay sa Sakada” Lanai of the Philippine Consulate in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Consulate General of the Philippines in Honolulu said in a statement sent to Sun.Star Pampanga that the giant lantern, courtesy of the City Government of San Fernando headed by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, is the main feature -- along with smaller Fernandino lanterns -- of the festival.

The grand lighting ceremony was led by no less than Hawaii Lieutenant Governor Brian Schatz and Honolulu Mayor-elect Kirk Caldwell.

The opening ceremonies also gathered 400 of the US state’s most influential community leaders, press and media practitioners, and members of the art, business and academic circles.

“The community marveled at the display of the giant parol at the Consulate’s parking lot, which overlooks the main highway. Those in attendance noted that the parol is perhaps is largest Christmas lantern in Hawaii. Maria Etrata, chair of the Philippine Celebrations Coordinating Committee of Hawaii, the Consulate’s community partner in organizing the festival, observed that the crowd could not contain their excitement over the lighting of the parol and the display of Christmas lanterns, stressing that the ornaments are symbolic of the Filipino Christmas spirit, encapsulating the importance and heart Filipinos put into the Holiday Season,” the statement noted.

Pampanga's 441st foundation day celeb features a "Parade of Festivals"
By Joelyn G. Baluyut
Monday 10th of December 2012

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga, Dec 10 (PIA) -- Pampanga is celebrating its 441st founding anniversary today, with a parade that will showcase the unique and grandiose local festivals of its towns and cities.

“It has been a long dream of the provincial government to bring together all our local festivals. A lot of Filipinos especially Kapampangans know the major traditions in one’s town but not all of them have witnessed the actual activities, and so with this parade, we will let you experience all of those at the same time,” Provincial Tourism Officer Arwin Lingat disclosed.

Anchored on the theme, “Abe-abe, Pagmasusian Panyulung ning Kapampangan (Together, we will work together for the development of people of Pampanga)," the parade will feature Mabalacat city's Caragan festival which honors Aetas, Magalang’s Kamaru (mole crickets) festival which is celebrated every August, Floridablanca’s Fiesta San Jose; Arayat's Mangga Festival; Mexico's Aguman Sanikulas which is centers on the famously baked local cookies; Lubao's blossoming Sampaguita; Porac’s Binulo (food cooked in bamboo); Sta. Rita’s Duman Festival (native rice cereal); Sasmuan’s Kuraldal which honors the town's patron Saint Lucy which is believed to help the blind and women help bear children; San Simon’s Sun-Sea-Moon; Bacolor’s Makatapak (barefoot); and Candaba’s Ibon-Ebon (bird’s festival).

Spanish colonizers reorganized what was once the Kingdom of Pampanga into a province under its tutelage in December 11, 1571.

The old kingdom’s dominion included portions of the modern-day provinces of Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Zambales.

In 1982, then-President Ferdinand Marcos designated December 11 as a holiday for the province through Proclamation 2226. (CLJD/JGB-PIA 3)

Feature: Central Luzon: The undisputed Belen and Lantern capital of the Philippines
By Joelyn G. Baluyut
Wednesday 12th of December 2012

Central Luzon has been famous for a number of things -- from gastronomic delights to fashion, from arts to sports. Name it and Central Luzon is surely on the A-list.

Every Christmas season, thousands of foreign and local tourists converge on the region to see and be amazed with the colorful displays of the Belenismo and Giant Lantern Festival in Tarlac and Pampanga, respectively.

In the gospel of Matthew, three wise men had followed a star known as the “Star of Bethlehem” to bring gifts to Jesus. Pampanga has giant replicas of this.

Eleven villages from the City of San Fernando will compete in the 2012 Giant Lantern Festival on December 15 at Robinsons Starmills.

Participants are defending champions Sta. Lucia, Calulut, Del Carmen, Del Pilar, Dolores, San Jose, San Juan, San Nicolas, San Pedro Cutud, Sto. Niño and Telabastagan.

Designer Eric Quiwa of Sta. Lucia promised to give the people “a burst of colors” on the night of the festival, while Del Pilar lantern-maker Raner Deveraturda disclosed that their entry this year has 9,000 bulbs.

According to historical accounts, the festival that is locally known as “Ligligan Parul (Showdown of Lanterns)," is believed to have started in 1908 when Francisco Estanislao pioneered the lantern-making industry in San Fernando.

Estanislao is said to have built a giant lantern for a Christmas procession during that year.

However, it was only in 1931 when the first lantern competition was formally organized. The inaugural contest was in honor of Aurora Aragon Quezon – wife of former president Manuel Quezon.

Through the years, several innovations were introduced to the competition, namely, the use of batteries in 1940, molding of steel wire as frame in 1950 and rotors in 1957.

Rotors are aluminum tubes that are moved so hair pins and a series of bulbs connected to these are exposed to the electricity source. The movements dictate when the bulbs will light up and project images.

Visitors can expect the burst of colors, the twinkling, a real of art of Kapampangas seen just right in front of them.

Visitors are invited to go to Central Luzon and experience the best of Philippine Christmas!
