The D800 can do everything the D4 can at half the price, unless your planning to become a combat photographer the D4 is a waste of money

Hold off if you can't currently afford it. And next there'll be something better when you can afford it anyway.

I was reading that the d800 has more grain and actually performs worse in lie light compared to my d700. And 32 or 36 megapixels is ridiculous with the file sizes being huge.

I still need to get the 24-70, but as always, other things need to be bought/paid for first.

This holy trinity you speak of, is it the 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200? If so, I'm in the same boat; just one more lens.

As for the D4, I was going to get it last year, but ultimately settled with the D800E. The grain for me isn't an issue. You can shoot close to 2000iso if you're blowing up photos and up to 5000iso if you're just posting medium-sized pics online. I will say that the D2,D3,D4 series just feels better. I had the D3, and felt a slight quality slide in construction and physical performance when switching to the D800E. As far as image quality goes, the D800E is a wonderful piece of equipment. You can blow up huge images, and they look amazing.

So here is what I wasted half an evening on tonight.. I was thinking throughout the day about phone cameras, and how I really never use mine. However, as much as I LOVE my dSLR (I sometimes think I'm dating it), I don't have it with me 24/7.. So while I was at work, I was looking at apps / ways to maximize the potential of my phone camera. I came across an app (Android) called Camera FV-5. It's 4 bucks, and it gives you a wide range of settings (Shutter speed, ISO, Metering, etc..). That's not really what sold me because there are a lot of free apps that do that. What sold me was the ability to shoot PNG's, aka RAW, uncompressed photos.

My phone is an LG Optimus G equipped with a 13 Megapixel sensor fixed at f/2.8. Honestly it sucks, especially with the stock camera app. This afternoon, I took Camera FV-5 out for a test drive, shot all PNG files, ran them through Adobe Camera RAW for adjustments, etc and was absolutely pleased and fascinated with the results.

TL;DR - dSLR & I have a steamy love for each other, can't have it with me 24/7, app on Android phone shoots uncompressed photos, ran through Adobe, results are great.

TL;DR TL;DR - RAW photos, Android Phone, Awesome.

^The first one is a bit too soft and the last one has too many blown out highlights but the others looks really really good! I'm especially surprised with the amount of detail displayed in the second pic. Looks like $4 well spent to me...

To be correct, PNG files use lossless compression, but they most certainly are not RAW files: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Network_Graphics

It was designed specifically in mind for still photographers how do advertising and fashion photography that would be used in printed media. If you keep this in mind the set up they designed is pretty ideal. This is really what you need. The D4 was designed to be for sports photographers and people that do events like that where they need to capture lots of action and need a faster refresh rate for exposures.

My photography is often a sociological look at American culture, and it's been very well published in the U.K.

Has there been discussion about applications to process Sony RAW files? I'm trying to do this. Is there something to convert them to other raw file types?

Yup - and no split-prism manual focus aid, either. The more I learn about it, the less it intrigues me.

Which camera are you using to create the RAW files, and are you a Mac or a PC user?

Some popular third-party RAW converters are Adobe Camera Raw, DXO Optics, Silkypix, Capture One; also Adobe Lightroom & Apple's Aperture. There are many others.
