This is one of those towers that really shines under low lighting conditions. Just picture the following conditions. Its raining, heavy winds, some lightning, and the lightning in its ferocious intensity lights up the facade for a brief 2-3 seconds.

Has that Gotham look to it. Like an evil persons lair.

Is that the beginning of the framework for the eastern apex in pics 1 and 2 (the Michael Lee pics)?

A friend of mine works for the City Planning Commission and I showed him that wondering the same thing.

IMO those coverings have to be what you're asking about. I've never seen the likes of it before.

"Its raining, heavy winds, . . lightning in its ferocious intensity
lights up the facade for a brief 2-3 seconds.
Has that Gotham look to it. Like an evil persons lair."
- chris08876 (feb 10th post)

beVARE ! . . the ominous TV spook lurks above ! . .
I only hope the tower doesn't loose its edge . . Literally !
namely the sharpness of the wedge that slices up into the sky . .
Many developers seem to think crown-uniqueness is somehow superfluous . .
they cluelessly hack off unique crown characteristics . .
They pull this routine at the last min. . . Hines won't at Verre . .
Here, ultra severe "dangerous" Gotham, is emblematic . .

But the angled Citicorp Tower Concept in the early render,
originally had a sleek, ulta-modern, razor-sharp top edge.
But the bastardized version actually built, radically blunted the top edge . .
The famous skyline wedge now sports wide "shelves" atop & below its slope . .
compromising the geometry . . (crucial "practical" reasons, plus savings) . .
(shape's even uglier with innumerable irregular hair-like antennae
"growing" out of it) . . Both north & south flat roof shelves, could've been
"dropped into" (hidden behind) a sharper east-west geometric profile . .

Developers love dumbing down unique, well-considered architectural design
for prissy architectural conservatives . . who get very uncomfortable
with the actual completion, of the fierce rogue design-punch, of a talented architect . .
After all, money's involved . . Here, Novell's top caliber shape, remains fierce as ever.

Sharp Spikes were, however, hacked off WTC tower 3 . .
their piercing distinctiveness obliterated . . Silverstein saved a traitorous buck . .
WTC tower 2 - Foster's amazingly intricate & expensive crown, hacked flat . .
no need to triumphantly accentuate BIG's easily stacked, cheap floor-plans . .
. . CPT's simple, but sublime, deco corner spire, got shunned . .
our tallest building grossly disarmed !!! . .
With that awesome spire, CPT is just too triumphantly "American" . .
too powerfully "Empire City" . . for Chinese billionaire-buyer sensibilities . .
Like a "privett" (rich folks' privacy hedge), hanging 1550 ft. over NYC . .
Extell now symbolically lords moneyed foreign "discretion" . .
(a dismal camouflage of blandness) from the very pinnacle of beloved Gotham . .

45 Broad Street, still fairly decent, got its sharp bristly top-shards neutered . .
they don't pierce sky now . . their silhouette wimps-out before a tall, flat parapet . .
the same could happen to 9 De Kalb before all is done . .
I assume KPF's tall shapely tops at 30 HY & 1 Vanderbilt, will be left un-redacted . .
But with all this cheap dumbing down, the hacking up, camouflaging, neutering,
and taming of proud NYC Tower Crowns . . its all much too "safe" & generic now . .
Hard to imagine many new evil lairs manifesting way up there . .
Thankfully, the dastardly wicked, horned Verre Spook, is soon to reside
in the thrillingly "evil" shard, slicing the stormy firmament above Gotham . .
go ghost-hunting anybody ? . .

This tower looks absolutely bonkers, and in a holy f way from the Waldorf Astoria perspective as portrayed by Michael Lee.

Its almost dagger, hook like illusion that is portrayed from an angle facing NW where the tower is the frame of reference, but in the North West direction.

I'll just repost it. I like this shot a lot.

Also, this angle really makes One57 Shine. Not a fan of it as viewed from Central Park South, but in this perspective, the side... it really shines. Its like a blue whale as viewed under the influence of Mescaline.

It may withstand those forces, but it couldn't withstand the radiation coming from Gale Brewers face, which caused Verre to lose some height in its growth process.

Manhattan’s skyscrapers are put through the most extreme tests you can imagine

Quote:
When developers build supertall towers, they head to a small handful of specialized facilities that pummel building samples with disastrous conditions to make sure they can stand tall.

There are only about three or four facilities in the country that can perform the tests, which simulate hurricane-force winds, rain, heat waves and arctic blasts, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Hines, for example, tested sections for 53 West 53rd Street, the 1,050-foot-tall condominium tower the Houston-based company is developing with Singapore’s Pontiac Land Group and Goldman Sachs.

The Jean Nouvel-designed tower features a tapered structure, criss-cross structural framing on its exterior and 6,000 panels of custom-made, triple-paned glass.

Hines made two mock-ups, which were tested at the Construction Research Laboratory in Miami, which resembles a post-apocalyptic landscape with airplane engines and other tools designed to batter buildings.

“It’s like a doctor wanting to test a human being by putting together a mock-up with one ear, one nose and one elbow,” said George Dotzler, the lab’s director.

The testing cost $150,000, and while municipal law requires some testing, most developers figure the price is nothing compared the cost of damage in an actual emergency.

Bizzi & Partners Development, which is building 125 Greenwich Street, paid about $210,000 to create a mock-up of the building, and another $163,000 for the testing.
