Actually, looking at the rendering, if I had a chance to redesign the tower, I think it could look cool if the north slit and south slit in the top went all the way down to the first floor of the building. Anyone else think that? Or would that look terrible? Oh well, too late now.

Here is a recent commentary on SFist.com:

Thanks, LA: Salesforce Tower Won't Be The Tallest Building In The West

http://sfist.com/2016/09/08/thanks_l...er_wont_be.php
Quote:
...Those obsessed with tall buildings and those who've been paying attention likely already knew this news. But while Salesforce Tower (née Transbay Tower), which once completed will stand at 1,070 feet, was at one point was touted as the soon-to-be tallest tower west of the Mississippi, that title is going to stay for now with the new Wilshire Grand, a 73-story, 1,099-foot-tall tower that just got its spire over the holiday weekend in downtown Los Angeles. The extra height, though, is largely because of that 295-foot spire, which is sort of a cheap gesture if you ask me, but apparently the spire will change color to reflect various holidays and things...

...Meanwhile, we'll be waiting until 2018 for our own tallest tower (at least north of LA) to be complete. Salesforce Tower will contain 61 stories of office space and it's as yet unclear whether there will be a public observation deck included — it was something that Planning commissioners suggested, but it was not required of the developer. Due to some concerns about shadows cast by the building, because these are things we argue about in SF, the top 150 feet of the building will actually be a translucent lattice of horizontal ribs...

SF is getting a tower as tall as the WG minus spire (50 1st st) as well as this tower which will look like a true 1070' (or more?) tower, in addition to 181 Fremont (800') and another 800' next to the Transbay Terminal. I'd say SF is clearly ahead here.

Not trying to nitpick at all, but it looks closer to 48. Still, a great guesstimate on your end!

Shall we change the title to 62 floors?

There are several possibilities:

1. The elevator shafts cap off up to 3 floors above the highest floor landing.
2. We are misinterpreting of some of the evidence we see, and there is no change to original floors counts and primary building height.
3. Floors are being added beyond what we (the public) know.
4. The section diagram is outdated.
5. A combination of several of the above.

I would stay with #2 for now until we can confirm otherwise.

Salesforce Tower has at least 61 floors. There is a discrepancy as to whether the 61st floor will be mechanical or commercial. If commercial, will a higher mechanical floor (62) be necessary, or will the roof house all mechanical equipment?

The maintenance/freight elevator shaft will rise the equivalent of nearly two stories above the roof level - to allow roof access and to store the elevator operational equipment above.

The salesforce website lists floor 61 as leased:

Wow is that smog? At first I thought I was looking at a photo of LA. Lol.

too bad about floor 61,, or 62,, or whatever it is...

IMHO: boggles the mind that the powers-that-be at Transbay or City Hall did not get them to make floor 61 some kind of public observation deck. London, New York, Chicago, LALA all have them.

Not only an awesome 360 degree view,
but... Could you image (also) being under or inside the sculpture-like crown?

Yes, that is correct. The building section diagram we have does show level 61 as mechanical though.

Just drive up to the top of Twin Peaks. Way better view of San Francisco. I'm not worried about it because the Bay Area has a lot accessible mountain peaks that provide stunning views. Ever been on top of Mt. Diablo? Freaking amazing up there! Chicago and NY need observation decks in their towers because they have no tall mountains like LA and SF.

No--it's fog and weather related haze! The air is particularly clean (and chilly) because of the wind coming in from the ocean too.

It could also mean my possibility #4, that the section diagram is in error and outdated.
