Uptown Pittsburgh.

Uptown is a narrow section of Pittsburgh, located east of Downtown, and running out to Oakland. The main streets are Fifth, and Forbes Ave. There are three basic parts to Uptown. Uptown proper, which is between Forbes and Colwell, and runs from Sixth Avenue, Downtown; out to Jumonville. The section south of Forbes Ave., is refered to as "The Bluff", as it overlooks the Monongahela River from about 200 feet up. The Bluff is home to two major institutions, Duquesne University, and Mercy Hospital. The third section, which runs from Jumonville, east to Oakland, is called Soho. Uptown once had a fairly strong identity, but is now very much considered to be a subsection of the Hill District.

Fifth Avenue in Soho.

Rowhouses on Forbes Ave. in Soho.

More Soho.

Looking towards the Lower Hill, from the Bluff.

Housing on the Bluff.

Forbes Avenue, looking west towards Downtown.

Alley houses on the Bluff.

Lonely survivors from what was once a dense commercial strip.

Watson St.

Forbes and Miltenberger. My great great grandmother lived on this block in 1850.

Houses on Fifth Avenue.

Looking down on the area from an empty lot on Colwell St.

Remains of a once densely packed neighborhood.

Remains of what was once the longest and most impressive house row on the Hill.

As we move up into the Hill proper, we see that suburbia has invaded right next to Downtown.

These are more appropriate for this area, though they should be spaced closer together.

Webster Avenue has (had) the best overall collection of houses on the Hill.

New infill frames what is the most impressive row of houses remaining on the Hill. Sadly, most of these are in deplorable shape, and there seems to be no plans to preserve them.

Nearly perfect.

These were occupied up until about 18 months ago.

These rare wooden rows will likely soon be replaced by an empty lot.

lovely photos... for being the critical link between Downtown and Oakland... Uptown remains unknown to most metro Pittsburghers... it's fallen hard... and portions keep sliding... but there are some very real signs of revitalization as well... and Duquesne's ambitious neighborhood plan will help... unfortunately Fifth and Forbes serve as automobile sewers slicing through the neighborhood (2-lane one-way speedways)

Great tour, it's cool that you can trace your roots so far back in the city you live in. Pittsburgh just oozes with history.

This hood will be on it's way to gentrification and condo buildings in the next 15 yrs..... It's location is great and it is cheap as hell to purchase anything there. That's the combination for development.

Thanks for the pics. It's a nice glimpse into Uptown you don't usually see.

I'll be moving to Pittsburgh in the next couple of years hopefully. I'm a native Pennsylvanian living in CA right now but I'm looking forward to moving back east and moving to a place I can afford a nice house. Any suggestions for areas I can be checking out that may be "up and coming" neighborhoods in the next 2 or so years? I'll be there over Christmas and I hope to scope out some 'hoods.

Thanks for any help anyone could give... Sorry, off topic.

That is called Insulbrick. It was extremely popular in the period before aluminum siding became the rage. It came in many different colors, but red, (to imitate brick) was probably most common. The stuff aged very poorly, and usually looks terrible today. Most houses with it were long ago covered with either aluminum or vinyl siding. For my money, asbestos shingles blow away all other types of aftermarket siding.

Man Made,
A lot will depend on what type of neighborhood you prefer. There are dense city neighborhoods, as well as more suburban types of areas. What were you looking for?
