New Area Code for Halifax

10-digit dialing is coming to Halifax, and maybe to all of Nova Scotia and P.E.I. The 902 exchange which use to be for all four Atlantic Provinces, has almost run out of new numbers.

I guess I don't get out much any more. I had no idea 10-digit dialing was commonplace in most other regions. I still don't understand why it is needed after reading that article.

They've had it for a while in the Toronto area with 905/416. In Vancouver more recently we've got 604/778.

I didn't know NS and PEI were that close to exhausting 902 but I guess it's not that surprising. The number of phone numbers used by people and businesses is going up dramatically because of cell phones and other uses that were less common in past decades.

Having just moved to the awesome HRM on June 26th from toronto, & having grown up in Hamilton, I had been dialing the 10 digit since 1998..

Hamilton (my hometown)..
905, 289

Toronto has (as far as I remember)
416, 289, 647, 905 <- mississauga & parts of Etobicoke (a suburb of Toronto)

Ottawa

Oshawa
905

Did N.L. really ever use 902? I assumed we'd been using 709 since area codes were introduced.

NL originally used the 902 area code as did NB. I believe both provinces switched over to their own area codes (NL-709; NB-506) sometime in the 50s or 60s, I believe. With the expansion of cell service and new exchanges popping up left, right, and centre, I think this will be the norm in the future. Actually, I think you can use 10 digit dialing everywhere now - it's just redundant for provinces with only one area code.

BTW, does anyone know what the new area code for NS will be?

Have you settled in Calgary? It seems that Nova Scotia keeps losing its most dedicated residents.

Yes but it wasn't without a fight.

To put it simply it turns out all Dalhousie cares about is wealthy money and marks. Dedication doesn't matter to them at all.

Anyways from what I have heard of Dalhousie in the last couple of years its better that I moved away. That school is going down the drain fast in quality.

I should restate that as "too many dedicated residents move away but many stay". In any case, seeing other parts of the country and how things are done elsewhere isn't a bad idea.

Will you be maintaining the HRM compilation thread out in Calgary Dmajackson? You certainly put a lot of effort into the Halifax threads.

Getting back on topic, I didn't realize that Nova Scotia still had 7 digit dialling.

Not sure where else to post this, not trying to advertise for Eastlink, but it's good to hear we have more competition in the wireless networks in N.S. and P.E.I.

Wireless Network Coverage from four major networks should bring better prices (Bell, Telus, Rogers, Eastlink).

Eastlink's network will be all 4G LTE.
