Stay tuned. It sounds like a major project will be announced after the new year in Minneapolis.

Milwaukee definately has a few nice projects in the works. This city always seems to get ignored, probably because it is so close to Chicago.

well that's certainly intriguing. could this be the long-rumored potential 1,000 footer that would take the minneapolis skyline to the next level?

We don't know yet how tall it will be. The developer is Ryan Companies, the architect is Pickard Chilton. The site is tight and about 100 feet from the IDS Tower. It is said the project will be in the neighborhood of 1.2 million square feet. On a smallish site, that could mean pretty tall. It's on the same block as the new "W" Hotel in the Foshay Tower.

All we know is that "there is a lot of excitement in the air."

well, that's fantastic. oh how i hope it'll be a new signigficantly taller building for minneapolis. and reaching 1,000' really ain't all the important, i would just love to see something rise at least a hundred or so feet above the current big 3. i LOVE the minneapolis skyline as it is. it really is a work of well-proportioned and balanced beauty, but my mind drools at the thought of 900+ foot scraper somehwere in the middle of it all. it would be like texbook skyline perfection.

Though I hesitate to post this on a national forum (because we really don't know if a new tower will be a supertall or not, AND posting any image like this is bound to cause all sorts of assumptions), here is an altered skyline shot of Minneapolis that:

1) Shows the scale & location of the possible new tower IF it was around 1000'. As mentioned, the site is across the street from the IDS Tower. The building used here is another Pickard Chilton tower that was manipulated in Photoshop.

2) Shows both the proposed Nicollet (on the left) and 401 Developments (gold tower on the right), even though the latter tower is on hold while the lower hotel portion is developed.

^^ that image is hot! if minneapolis gets anything close to that, it will be amazing! come on minnie, you can do it, someone else in the midwest other than chicago needs to start building some seriously tall new scrapers!

i'm rooting for that big st. louis proposal too. i wanna see new big-ass towers rising in all of our midwestern skylines. the sun-belt (atlanta, houston, dallas, miami, charlotte, etc.) has been having far too much of the fun for too long.

^Me too. I think St. Louis, and Cleveland might both be ripe for new major developments. But that is just my perception. What is the reality of the office markets in those two cities?

Any news on the Evanston fountain square proposal? Is there any chance it'll actually get by the crazy/irrational evanston zoning board?

there hasn't been any news on evanston's fountain square proposal since it was first announced, but my grapevine sources say that it's still being pursued. as for whether or not it will get through evanston city hall, that's really the $64,000 question. there's no doubt in my mind that the retail, hotel, and residential portions of the project can be economically supported by the market in downtown evanston; the whole development really hinges upon whether the city of evanston wants it or not.

Clayton was the hot spot, while downtown STL was in a slump, but people are moving to Illinois, improving the value of Downtown. So, little-by-little, it's getting better, or so I would assume.

^ thanks for the update sirus, the info on page 1 has been updated accordingly. i kinda like the older taller design more, but the new project looks pretty nice too.

I think the older plan had some interesting design elements, but didn't really make sense as a building. It seemed more like a test in how to fit as much into a site as possible without going too tall. It looked like it was going to consume the small buildings on the site that have to remain.

Basically the new one is a vast improvement in things that don't have a strong impact of the tower design, like pedestrian movement, parking, services, security, mix of retail and office space, etc.

Here's a site plan for anyone interested:
