great old pic is right, including many of the things that aren't in it...
no centre medians
no "bulbs" impeding traffic flow or cutting off bus lanes
no sidewalk structures impeding pedestrians and sight lines
and some that are...
lots of neon
lots of canopies and awnings
sidewalks with people on them
and some cool cars (particularly the chrysler at the curb and the two tone nash (?) cab)

The owner is just another real estate shark. Most likely never had any intention to rehabilitate the Gem.

Too bad none of Edmonton's other preservationist developers (Day or Dub) bought the building and restored it. That leaves only two of downtown Edmonton's movie palaces (Odeon aka New City and The Paramount) still standing, though obviously none in operation and both threatened with demolition for new towers...

On a related note, does anyone think the Gem should be rebuilt once its demolished? Personally I do!

It should definitely be rebuilt. It is too valuable a part of that block to not rebuild.
